Meshroom Scanning

So for this project, I was planning to use the handheld scanner in the lab to complete this assignment. But since there is some problem with the machine, I use Meshroom instead. The thing that I scanned is a toy called "Duduke", a creature in game Genshin. Its surface is furry, and the final outcome is quite nice.

Instructables could not upload obj files, but here is the link of the 3D model:

Take Photos!

The first step is to take photos of Duduke. The weather in Shanghai is sunny with very strong sunshine, so I choose to take pictures indoor. But the problem is about lighting. Inevitably, since there are lights all around the space, there are shadows that raised the difficulty for Meshroom to identify the item. I hang the toy using wire, and took 93 pictures around it. I took continuous pictures and sometimes zoom in a little bit to get more details. The pictures are from all angle, including the bottom.

Meshroom Is Working

After I import all my pictures into Meshroom, I press "start" and it begins to work. When I used it for the first time, it shows an error and said "no node to do this", but after I restart the software, everything goes fine. It took really long time(about half an hour) to go through the first 10%, but it went pretty smooth later on. However, some of the photos(especially pictures that I took from the bottom) can not be used. So there is a huge hole on Duduke's tail.

In order to fix this, I import the file from Meshroom to Meshmixer. I use edit-make solid to fill up the hole. The result is nice. Since the surface of the toy is furry, the model is also not very smooth, but I would like to keep this kind of texture. Finally, I exported the obj file from Meshmixer.
