Mermaid Plushie

Entered on behalf of my little sister.

I decided to make a plushie mermaid because I have never made one before. I am also giving it to my cousin as a b-day present.

Supplies

- blue tule cloth

- yellow poly satin

- dark blue yarn. i got mine at hobby lobby

- waverly inspirations muslin. I got this at walmart

- patterns. I drew my patterns and have photos of them.

- dark blue cloth

- baby pink ribbon. thin. one finger wide.

- coral ribbon as thin as possible

- 2 large buttons. same color.

The Torso

In this step, you cut out the pattern, pin it to your muslin, cut it out, sew it on a machine, without sewing the part that connects to the tail, stuff the torso, and embroider the face. Also, before sewing, check that you have right sides together. And, chopsticks are essential for turning out. If you sew before making the face, (which is what I did.) you should pass the needle under the cloth by poking it in and then pinch the cloth together so that the needle is in between your fingers with your free hand in such a way that it stays under the cloth without you losing it. Then you pass it to your other hand in the same manner. Pass it along as I described till you reach the spot where you want to start sewing, then poke the needle through the material and pull gently until the knot gets stuck on the material.

The Tail

For this step, you basically just sew it on a machine, without sewing the part of the tail that connects to the mermaid, with right sides together, and turn it out by putting it on like a glove and poking the inside out bits till they turn right way out. Pretty simple.

Full Body Together

Stuff the tail like you stuffed the body, then put the unsewn end of the torso into the unsewn end of the tail. then hand sew them together nice and tight.

Hair.

You need to hand sew 3 rows of hair. I do not blame you if you want to try messing with it, (to do it easier.) or if you just do it the way I am explaining here. So, you sew the 3 rows right? Only sew 2 so that they come over the back of her head. The 3rd is the bangs. Divide the bangs in half, and pull each half to the side it is on. I sewed them in place, but you could also probably use hair clippies. I also used a cool little crocheted flower as a hair clippie.

Frills.

In this step, you sew those little frills that mermaids have on top of their tails, y'know? These frills are gold like the tail. Sew them up, turn them out, you know the drill. This is also the step in which you give your mermaid scales. layer 4 layers of your blue tool, and cut out your tail pattern in tool. Sew all four layers together then reach your hand up inside so that you have 2 layers of tool on each side of your hand. Then pinch the tip and take your hand out and slide the mermaid's scales over her tail and sew nice and tight by hand.

Swim Top

For this, you sew the buttons to the baby pink ribbon and wrap it around her under her armpits. Sew the ribbon together. Turn the coral ribbon into straps and sew the straps onto the swim top, and you are nearly good to go! All you need to do is take a bit of thread, no knot, and sew through the ribbon and into the cloth under the ribbon so that the swim top is in the right place, and out again through the ribbon, BUT DO NOT PULL THE THREAD ALL THE WAY THROUGH! Instead, tie the thread end to end and cut the ends short. After you have finished, you are done.
