Melt Plastic Bags Into Tea Light Candle Holder
I wanted to see how I could transform everyday plastic bags into something else.
This is a neat way to reuse them, but it's really bad for your body / environment.
The fumes from baking this made me nauseous!!!!!
Gather Supplies
You need:
- A baking sheet
- A container to mold your plastic bags in x 2 --> use ones that can stack on top of one another
- Foil
- Plastic bags
Bake Your Plastic Bags
- Line your baking sheet with a couple pieces of foil, just so the plastic doesn't melt onto the sheet.
- Place plastic bags onto sheet.*
- Set the oven to 350 degrees F and put in oven.
- *Tip: Tie the plastic bags into knots so that they're not all over the place and are more compact.
Setting Up Mold
- After the bags look sufficiently melty, take your baking sheet out of the oven. You might have to do this a couple of times to get the amount of melted plastic you need. So either use a lot of baking sheets or use a deep dish to hold your plastic bags in.
- Get your mold ready:
- To prepare your mold, line it with foil!
- Using chopsticks, tongs, or gloves, transfer the melted bags into the mold.
Molding Part 2
- Place another sheet of foil on top of the melted plastic in the mold.
- Press down with your hand..
- Then, use a container that fits into your mold (in my case, I used an identical tart tin) to press the plastic bags into the container holding your melted plastic to form a bowl.
Molding the Part That Holds the Candle
- After pressing the melted plastic, take off the top layer of foil
- To create the part that holds the candle, I used a beer bottle to press into the melted bags again. Do this while it's still moderately warm and pliable.
Freeze
Place everything into freezer so it can harden!!!
Final Steps
Take out of freezer and use exacto to trim wayward parts off.
CANDLE TIME
Place the tea light into your new candle holder~~~
