McHangry Muncher

IMG_2083.JPG

McMuncher is a character based off of consumerism and a spoof of McDonald's. The Mouth acts as the switch when open and closed. If there is a hamburger or the mouth is open, the lights turn off. When the mouth is closed and hungry, the red eyes turn on and the McMuncher is hangry.

Supplies

  • 2 (3V batteries)
  • 4 alligator clips
  • copper tape
  • 2 red LED lights
  • Milk Carton
  • Styrofoam Ball
  • Plastic Mouth
  • Plastic Nose (decoration)
  • Paint & Pens
  • Hot Glue

Hollow Eye

First, cut the styrofoam ball in half and hollow it out. This should act as a good insulator and the one LED pokes straight through from the front to act as the Iris. Attach two alligator clips from the backside to the positive and negative leg.

Test and Do Second Eye

Test to make sure LED light lights up with coin battery to avoid any issues in the future as well with the other LED light. Repeat Step One with the second half of the styrofoam ball.

Make Switch

attach copper tape to the top and bottom of the back molars on the plastic tooth toy. Using electrical tape, tape down one 3V battery on each side so that when the mouth closes, both coins are being touched top and bottom by the copper tape. Make trails of the copper tape to the back to attach to gator clips in next step.

Cut Milk Carton

Assemble the milk carton by cutting out pieces where the mouth can extend out. Use hot glue to glue down the bottom of the mouth to the bottom of the carton to make a sturdier switch.

Open the Back

Open the back of the milk carton and assemble the face. The two eyes are glued into place and there are holes from the inside of the milk carton where the alligator clips can reach them. Connect each alligator clip to its respected battery making two simple circuits that turn on with the same action.

Decorate Carton and Final Test

Place a plastic food into the mouth of the McMuncher and take it out to see if the eyes light up red. If they both do then he is hungry and also you have made a creative switch!
