In use since the 1800’s, cardboard today works as a reliable shipping container and a useful building material. To show cardboard’s versatility, this instructable will walk you through how to make a marzipan dispenser, though the concepts of this design can be scaled up or down to make a dispenser for any candy of your choosing.

Supplies

For this project you will need:

Materials:

  • Cardboard
  • Hot Glue Gun & Hot Glue Sticks
  • Thin Metal Wire/Rod

Tools:

  • Exacto Knife
  • Wire Cutter
  • Pliers
  • Ruler
  • Pencil

Using the measurements listed, cut out these parts that will be used in this project, and cut out a 5cm x 6cm hole at the bottom of one outer wall, 2.5cm away from each edge.

Preparing the Frame of the Device

Glue one wall to your front piece, then attach a second wall lined up with the hole in the front piece.

Attach the Inner Pieces

Draw the outlines where the inner pieces will go:

  1. Place one inner guiding wall 3.5 cm away from the wall with the opening, and place the other wall 3 cm away from the opposite edge.
  2. Place 1 inner grate 1 cm below the inner guiding wall, up against the edge furthest from the opening. The other Inner grate will also be 1 cm below the guiding wall, with one edge placed directly underneath that inner wall
  3. Place the stopper near the edge furthest from the opening, 5 cm below the Inner grates

Then Glue these pieces to the wall, following your outlines.

*Note: the top cover is glued to the rest of the device in this image. This was only to keep the walls together in between work sessions.

Cut Sliding Mechanism Struts

Cut two pieces of wire or rod with your wire cutters. These pieces should both be 7 cm long. Then bend one wire slightly using pliers.

Cutting Some More Cardboard

Cut out these pieces of cardboard to build the frame of the sliding mechanism.

Make the Knob

Glue the two 2 cm x 4.5 cm pieces, and the 1 cm x 4.5 cm piece to make a knob as shown.

Build the Mechanism's Frame

Lay down one 1 cm x 6 cm piece flat on your table, then glue the two 1 cm x 4 cm pieces at opposite ends, leaving some space at the edges.

Glue the remaining 1 cm x 6 cm piece to the tops of the standing struts.

Putting It All Together

Glue the rods to the empty spaces beside each strut (with the bent rod curving inwards) and glue the opposite ends to the shorter part of the knob made earlier.

Putting It All Together (Part Two)

Ensure that the marzipan will fit into the space between the rods, then place your mechanism into the space underneath the guiding walls.

Then join the guiding walls together with the securing wall. This will secure the marzipans when not in use.

Sealing It Away

Seal the device using the last remaining wall.
