Martian Manhunter Superhero Emblem - Wood and Resin

The Martian Manhunter emblem / logo is the last emblem we will be making for the Justice League / DC wall we've been working on for the past few months. Much like the Aquaman emblem we made a few weeks ago, this one is also very simple, at least as far as shape is concerned. Just like every other emblem we've made so far, this one too, is made of wood and resin.

Make sure you watch the video, as it shows a bit more of each of the steps.

We started off with a short piece of oak that we had. Then we put down a layer of blue painter's tape. This will allow for easy removal of the pattern once we are done cutting. Next, we sprayed an adhesive onto the tape and then applied the pattern. The only thing left to do was drill holes in each of the four areas that were to be cut out.

The first cut is to remove the pie shaped pieces. To do this we just inserted the blade into the holes we had drilled and cut out the shape. We did use a bit thicker of a blade for this cut since the shape was pretty basic and didn't take a lot of tight turns.

We always add a vinyl sheet (contact paper) to the back of the piece before we pour to create a seal so it will not leak. Then we mixed up the resin (look here for details on that) and added some green acrylic paint into the mix.

It's simple enough. We poured slowly, trying to get each section even and then we popped any air bubbles that rose to the surface with a lighter. Then we let it cure for 12 hours before moving on.

After the resin was cured we drilled another hole smack in the middle. Then we cut just a bit over from the edge of each of the previous cuts to create a hollow "x" shape.

We did the same thing as the other step, but instead mixed up a little more and added red. Again, we let it cure for 12 hours before moving on.

That last thing to do was get the round outer shape. We did this by cutting a little bit away from the line on the band saw and then fine tuned it on the disc sander; sanding right up to the line. Then we peeled off the template and added a few coats of tung oil to all of the exposed wood.

That's it. To hang it on the wall we just use two of the 3M poster tabs, since the emblem isn't very heavy. If you've seen our other symbols, then you know this one was pretty similar to the rest.
