The top of my grand-father table was spoilt, I decided to restore it. I chose to make a geometric marquetry.

I drew the pattern with inkscape.

Supplies

0.6 mm veneer, laser cutter, wood glue, press, scraper, sandpaper 120, 180 and 240, varnish.

Choice of Veneer

3 different tons.jpg
The thickness of the veneer is 0,6 mm.
It is important to have 3 different tones of veneer to have the 3D effect. For example : hornbeam, cherry, mahogany

Drawing With Inkskape

Draw the basic pattern, duplicate it x times.

Orientation of the Cutout

Wood grain and laser head movement.jpg

Cut out the pattern with the laser. Take care to arrange the wood grain along the laser cutting x axis.

Experiment to choose laser parameters.

Assembly

Assemble the elements, hold them with tape.

Gluing

Mise sous presse.jpg
Glue on a 16mm thick MDF plate, approximately 80x40 cm.
Place under press for 24 hours.

Finishes

Gently remove the tape without defibrating. If necessary, use a hair dryer to more easily remove the tape.
Scrape with a scraper then sand with grits: 120, 180 and 240.
Varnish.
Admire your handwork and be happy.
