Mario Styled Block Shelves With a Hidden Compartment

IMG_3504 2.jpeg

Ok let's get started off with I slapped this together the best I could as quick as I could and as I'm sitting here at 11P.M. on sunday night before the deadline I will admit this is not finished and will be finished after the close of the contest. I will put finished pictures on my IG @americangraphitti

I have 3 Mario obsessed boys so why not make a cool shelf for them to hide all their mario figures in! So lets get this rolling before that red shell hits and throws me off course again....

Supplies

This is a list of tools and supplies I used. However everyones workshops are a little different so use what you got and just lets get it going!

Tools:

Milwaukee M18 tablesaw

Milwaukee M18 router

Milwaukee M18 drill/driver

Milwaukee tape measure

Milwaukee M12 23gauge pin nailer

Dewalt benchtop planer

Dewalt mitre saw

Supplies:

4'x4' sheet of 1/2" plywood

12" square of 1/4" plywood

2- 1"x4" @8' standard pine board

1 set of 90* hinges

paint (I used rattle cans for convenience factor)

white, yellow, brown and black

and a polycrilic spray on finish

18 - 1 1/4" Kreg pocket screws

Material Breakdown

I started with breaking the plywood down. This one 4'x4' sheet is enough for this job. Here is how I cut down the plywood. I ripped the plywood down on my m18 job site tablesaw, then to the mitre saw to finish it off.

1 pc. 36"x12" (face)

2 pc. 36"x8.5" (top & bottom)

1 pc. 36"x11" (back)

2 pc. 11"x8" (ends)

Planning Boards

I stepped on the banana peel and forgot to take pictures of planning down the 1x4's I thinned them down to 1/2" to have a nice clean surface to work with.

Making the Bricks

IMG_3462.jpg

I started with rounding over the boards before cutting down to size to have minimal (sketchy improper moments). My cutlets on these boards went like this.

8 - 6"

2 -7.5"

8 - 2"

4 - 6.25"

2 - 8"

after cutting these down then I finished routing the round over on these.

layout for the bricks:

FACE END

6" (space) 6" 2" (s) 6.25"

2" (s) 7.5" (s) 2" 8"

6" (s) 6" 2" (s) 6.25"

Question....

well I used a scroll saw to cut out the ? from the 1/4" plywood.... I also cut out the 4 circles for the corners and as you can see in the pictures one of the koopalings hid them from me when I was assembling and I have yet to relocate them...

Sanding.....

No pictures or description besides sand everything smooth to prevent splinters into the fingers as to not hinder Mario Kart abilities.

Spray, Tape and Spray More

I hopped on Bullet Bill and took a ride here and forgot to snap several pictures of this process.... I taped off to have a clean 12" wide block on the face top and bottom and sprayed them yellow. ( then reversed the tape and painted the rest of the plywood black.

the 1x4 pieces i sprayed brown

and the question mark and circles white.

I sprayed 3 coats on all and still found light spots but hey I literally started this 3 days ago...

Pocket Holes

Since making this a hidden compartment shelf might as well use pocket holes! quick and easy! a little wood glue and a couple screws and were picking up some gold coins!

Lets Start Assembly!!

I used my M12 23ga pin nailer here. I tacked the ? on with a little glue and (overkill on the pin nails). I then started getting the bricks on. I started from the yellow edge and worked to the outside edge. Key to note on the outer edges I have the bricks over hanging by 1/2" to help hide the this will open when its all done! Glue on the back and pin nail in each corner!

(in hindsight attaching the face with the hinges before putting everything on the face would be easier and quicker)

Since I got slapped by a green turtle shell I did not do this I assembled and then put the hinges on....

Finished Up... Well Kind Of...

Yes I have to finish mine out but I made this deadline for the intstructable with an almost complete shelf. Lol I will be finishing it up and posting the final pictures on IG. I have some touch up paint. and i think I am going to add some earth magnets in the corners of the face for a little extra strength to the face. I hope you enjoyed this and get out and just have some fun making something! I will be writing more instructables very soon and will be starting my youtube channel and increasing my social media influence on IG give me a follow and lets have some fun!
