Making the World's Fastest Airplane - The SR-72 Dark Star

This is a very fast RC Plane which we are going to build and fly. It crashed very badly at the end.

Supplies

Materials needed to Build the Plane:-

  1. 0.5 inch thickness thermocol
  2. Glue gun
  3. Metal wire for control rods
  4. Black Paint

Electronics Setup:-

  1. Flysky FS-i6X Transmitter & Receiver
  2. A2212 2450KV BLDC Motors
  3. 5045 Propellers
  4. 40A Electronic Speed Controller
  5. MG90S Servo Motors
  6. 11.1V 2200mAh 40C Li-Po Battery

Making the Outline

First, we make the outline of the given plane on 0.5 inch thickness foam.

Making the Body

We cut out the parts from the foam.

After that, we join all the parts together using hot glue.

Painting

After the airframe is ready, we paint the whole body and also add some details and stickers to give it a more scale and realistic look. The paint I used is a normal black poster color.

Making the Control Surfaces

Now we make the control surfaces of the Airplane. This is what controls the plane while it is in the air. There are two control surfaces for this model which are located at the trailing edges of the wings.

The control surfaces this plane uses is called Elevon which is a combination of elevator and ailerons.

Elevon = Elevator + Aileron

We use a small MG90S servo motor to move the surface with the help of a control rod.

The Engine

Screenshot (220).png

Next up, we have the Engine of the Airplane. Which are two Brushless DC Motors.

These are A2212 2450KV motors.

We install them at the rear end of the plane.

Electronic Speed Controllers

Screenshot (223).png

Then we install the ESCs which control the speed of BLDC motors.

The two ESCs are wired up in parallel.

Propellers

Screenshot (224).png

Then we install the propellers.

The propellers used are 5045 props.

They should be opposite in direction to each other so that the spinning motion of the two motors balance each other.

Receiver

Screenshot (225).png

Now we install the receiver which receives signals from the Transmitter and controls the Movement of the airplane.

The wiring is as follows:-

  1. CH1 - Left servo
  2. CH2 - Right servo
  3. CH3 - ESCs

Battery

Screenshot (227).png

Next up, we make a mounting for the battery

This is a Lithium Polymer battery which is 2200 mah and 40C, and can deliver a current of 88 Amps.

We install the battery such that it balances the Airplane at its Center of Gravity. The CoG is shown in next steps.

Transmitter Setup

The next step is to set the Transmitter to Elevon Settings so that it can control this type of Airplane

A have made a detailed video on how to do this setting

Center of Gravity

The CoG is shown here.

The plane should balance perfectly when held from this point.

Fly It!

Now its the time to fly the Plane

Crash It!

I crashed this plane, accidentally. But no worries. We can make it again!
