Making the Fanciest Beer Koozie You Ever Seen!
In this Instructable I'll show you how i made a Segmented Beer Koozie, hope you find some inspiration to make your own!

Materials and Tools You Will Need!
Tools Used:
- Table saw
- Planer/ Jointer
- Miter saw or a Miter sled
- Wood Lathe
- Disc sander or you can sand by hand
Materials/Supplies:
- Preferred Wood
- Wood glue
- Sand paper
- Clear Spray lacquer
- Carnauba or Bees wax
Milling the Wood to Final Dimensions
First you need to prepare your wood to get the right dimensions. i used my jointer/planer combination machine to square up the wood and get it prepared to go to the table saw.
At the table saw you need to rip down your wood to the right thickness and width. Those measurements are given you by the segment thickness and hight. In my case i have chosen to make the segments 1.5 cm thick and 1.7cm wide.
Cutting the Segments and Sanding
You need to cut your strips now on a miter sled or a miter saw. so that the angles of your cuts added to each other equals to 360 degrees to get a ring. I choose to go with 9 segments this means i needed to cut mine to 20 degrees on each side. Afterwards you probably need to sand the faces of each segment to get a perfect ring when you glue them together.
Glueing the Segments
To glue the segments together it's better for safety reasons to use water tight glue. For clamping i used some rubber bands But you can also use hose clamps. After the glue is dry overnight, you can sand the rings to get a nice tight and even glue joint when gluing the rings together. For this you can use a disc sander or sandpaper on a flat surface.
For clamping the rings to a tube shape i used 2 pieces of wood where i drilled a matching size hole for a piece of all thread. You also can use the wood lathe for clamping them.
Turning the Koozie to Shape
I glued a ring to a piece of wood that i can mount in my lathe chuck and turned the inside of the ring because this is going to be the bottom piece and i cant reach deep enough with my turning tools, if you have the tools you don't need to do this.
As i mentioned in the previous step you can clamp the rings in your lathe as you see in the picture, Afterwards you can turn the "tube" to the desired shape.
Finishing Touches
After the hollowing and the shaping of the outside is done you can add some chamfers to the bottom and the top so that the piece looses some bulkiness.
Sand the outside up to 400 grit using sandpaper or a sanding mesh and apply some finish. I did mine with Carnauba wax on the outside and a few coats of Clear Spray Lacquer on the inside to protect it from moisture. Than part the koozie of the lathe.
Enjoy Your Drink!
After you done all this work you deserve a cold drink for sure!
