Making a Simple Flashlight With COB LED
COB LED stands for Chip-on-Board Light Emitting Diode. It is a packaging technology that packages multiple LED components onto a single integrated circuit, forming a single LED module. COB LED has higher luminous efficacy, lower thermal dissipation, and lower power consumption, making it more popular than traditional LED modules.
The main advantages of COB LED include higher luminous efficacy, lower thermal dissipation, and lower power consumption. The higher luminous efficacy allows for more light output than traditional LED modules. The lower thermal dissipation allows for higher efficiency. The lower power consumption reduces electricity consumption.
The main disadvantages of COB LED include cost, packaging complexity, and heat dissipation. The cost of COB LED modules is higher than traditional LED modules, making it unsuitable for some applications. The packaging complexity increases the difficulty of maintenance and repair. The heat dissipation performance is poor, which may lead to overheating issues.
Supplies
- Custom PCB x 1
- 26mm 3V COB LED x 1
- SMD Switch 12C02 x 1
- 51Ohms 0805 SMD resistance x 1
- 100Ohms 0805 SMD resistance x 1
- 2 AA battery Box With Switch (Transparent) x 1
- some magnet wire
Make a Custom PCB
First measure the internal space of the battery box using a caliper. Then use easyEDA to draw a PCB with slots for the COB LED module so that it can be lit from both sides,
EasyEDA is a powerful and free software, . Choosing a white PCB color can help maximize the light output from the COB LED module. This ensures that the flashlight will be bright and efficient.

Solder
In just a few days, I received the custom PCB from the factory and was able to enjoy the DIY assembly process. I used a regular soldering iron and a reflow soldering station to demonstrate how to solder SMD components. With the help of the custom PCB, I was able to assemble the entire flashlight quickly and easily. The entire assembly process can be viewed on YouTube
Detailed Tutorial
With the help of a custom PCB, I was able to make a COB LED flashlight in just a few simple steps. It is not as bright as a regular flashlight, but it is perfect for providing soft lighting on a desk. I also added two different current limiting resistors so that I can switch between two different brightness levels with a small switch. This allows for efficient lighting or long-term soft lighting, depending on the user's preference. I hope everyone enjoys my creation and finds it useful.
