Making a Maker Space

As we had two weeks on are hands we decided to decorate a space for distance learning. we had some old 2 by 4's laying around so I took all the nails and staples out of them. After 2 days of work I was ready to plain them down. We put the desk making on hold to paint the room we First painted a multi color wall for are first coat. Then we make some cardboard cutouts of hexagons. we used tape and taped out the lines of the hexagons.After that we painted a cote of white paint over the whole wall. The final step for the wall was to take the tape of and reveal are hard work. After that we got to work on are desks we made a sketch of are desks in sketchup. Me and my dad made the desks and then stained them with a black stain to create an industrial look to the desks. my mom painted the in sides of the hexagon in the desk. my dad put a bonding agent on the bottom of the desktop so it would hold together. Are last step was to decorate we laid out a area rug and made are desks personal. My sister and I have been working in the space for four weeks now and we love it.

We used mostly recycled materials so this is a rough estimate

Our first coat of paint is a multi color craziness. Remember that it doesn't have to be perfect becouse a layer of paint is going on top.

When taping make sure to be as precise as possible and once in awhile check out how you are doing by making sure it's level with leveling tool. In this process start from the center and work your way out. If there is any little pieces of tape in the center of the hexagons remove it with and utility knife.

After the tape is removed, the wall should look something like this. Make sure to remove the tape carefully to prevent peeling of the previous layer of paint.

The desk was made by recycled 2 by 4's that were planed and bolted together. This is the design that we created in Sketchup.

We used a sheet of Masonite Board that was 4' x 8' and cut it into two 'L' shapes with a Jigsaw. This allowed for very little waist of the material. We also rounded out the edges of the board using a hand router.

We then cut the measurements of the desk legs using a Miter Saw. Using a electric drill with a Forstner bit we created the holes for the leg bolts. We then drilled the leg bolts with a Impact Driver.

Once the base of the desk was assembled we then added the color to the wood. We used black water-based wood stain and applied that with a rag. We added three coats allowing dry time between the coats of stain. Then we added lacquer to the desk using a foam brush to seal the stain. After dry, we did a light sand with 220 grit sand paper. The desk was then covered by a water-based polyurethane. We then used a small amount of the wall paint and a paint brush to give the desk a little color in the hexagons that we created in the design. Finally, the top and base of the desk were connected to each other using a latex caulk.

Now all you have to do is decorate the room so it's yours. We added storage for legos and craft supplies. We also added pegboard and sprayed the utility box with paint to allow it to become a display board for paper projects. A carpet on the floor made the room more comfortable.
