Gather Materials
(2) 9" pans
(2) cake mixes
Decorator Icing
White and Black Fondant
Gel Colors for Icing/Fondant
Fat Milkshake Straws/Toothpicks
Icing piping bags and tips
Various Food Decorating Glitter/Candies
Make Cake
Assemble cake according to directions; one FULL cake mix for each pan. We made one Pink and one Yellow. Pick a color that appeals to you!
Bake Cake
Fill each 9" pan with cake batter; place each pan on a cookie sheet. Use recommended temperature and add 25 minutes to the cooking time; Cake is done when knife inserted in center comes out clean.
Level Bottom Layer
Trim one of the cakes by slicing the top off using a long knife and the pan as a guide.
Assemble Layer Cake
Place a piece of parchment on cake turn table then add a dollop of frosting in the middle to make sure the cake won't move. Place first cake layer on the turn table add dots around perimeter and spiral interior [as shown in the picture]. Add second cake layer, try to make the cake layer as straight as you can but once you put it down its down don't move it. Finally add a thin layer of frosting all over cake so the fondant will stick.
Cover Cake With Fondant
Roll out fondant to 1/8-1/4 inch thick to cover the cake. When you finish rolling your fondant, roll the fondant around the rolling pin then gently unroll on cake. Trim fondant around base. [don't forget to save some extra fondant for decorations] Pipe colored decorator icing around the base. Tip: To divide cake into quarters for the seasons; gently use a knife to lightly press a dent in the cake horizontally and vertically.
Prepare Decorations
Use toothpicks to apply gel to fondant balls and blend using gloved hands . Wash hands between colors so as not to contaminate colors. Here we used pre-colored black, white (no color), pink, orange, burgundy, yellow and brown. Roll colored fondant onto parchment and use cut milkshake straws to create leaves, flower petals, and circle shapes. Tip: It is better to buy black fondant than to try to make it from white icing and black color gel.
Decorate Season Quadrants
For each season quadrant, use fondant decorations along with colored icing and food glitter/candy to create season appropriate scenes. Have Fun with decorating ... get the kids involved!
Pipe Labels on Cake Side
Pipe icing labels on cake side for each quadrant. Tip. not everyone can pipe letters well; we found that if you construct each letter with dots of icing it is easier to keep the letters uniform and the words in line.
Enjoy!
