Making a Diamond Shaped Plaster Plant Pot

This is an instruction sheet for creating a geometric plant pot in the shape of a diamond.

- Polypropolene

- Scissors

- Pen/Pencil

- Ruler

- Empty yogurt cup

- Plaster Powder

- Water

- Bucket

- Spatula

- Clear Tape

- Dry Sandpaper (no. 2)

- Exacto knife

- Cup (optional)

Sketch and cut out one diagram with the same measurements as the first image shown above. Using this piece of polypropylene, place it on another sheet and trace it with a pen or pencil. Repeat this step 6 more times while making sure the long side of each consecutive face is adjacent to one another. You should end up with 7 faces/sides altogether. Cut out (net should resemble the 3rd image).

With a ruler and utility knife, score along the lines of each side that will be folded into an edge. This includes a horizontal line across each face and the outlines between each of them. With a utility knife, apply a small amount of pressure and go over the lines only once to prevent cutting through the polypropylene. After this, use clear tape to attach all sides together, creating a 3D diamond (finished mold should resemble pictures 2 and 3).

With a bucket and spatula, create a casting plaster mixture by mixing water and plaster powder together in a ratio of 2:3 (2 of water and 3 of plaster powder). Stir well with a spatula until the texture of the mixture is consistent with no clumps of plaster powder.

As the diamond mold lacks a steady base, carefully position the mold on an empty round cup (optional). Gradually pour the plaster mixture into the mold until there are 2 centimeters left before it would reach the mouth of it. Use a yogurt cup as your core, manually hold it down with your hands, or use clear tape to make sure the cup is positioned at the center of the mold, with 5 centimeters of it submerged in the plaster mixture. Leave the plaster mixture to set and harden for at least 1.5 hours.

Once the plaster has fully solidified, peel off the mold and take out the core (remove these two pieces any way you like as they will not be needed for the remainder of this process). Use no.2 dry sandpaper to buff and smooth out any rough surfaces. Once you are satisfied with the texture of the surfaces of the product, your plant pot is considered finished and is ready to be used for its purpose.
