Making DIY Fabric Micarta at Home the Quick Easy and Super Cheap Way.
In this Instructable, we will be showing you how to make your very own fabric micarta. We use them for knife scales but they do have many other uses.
Supplies
Clear Resin - we use Barnes Epoxycast clear casting resin
Fabric - we buy cheap fabric from op shops
gloves
face mask
2 wooden planks or another flat material to press the micarta together
something to clamp the fabric with
baking paper
scales or measuring cup (this will depend on how your resin is measured)
Cutting and Preparing the Fabric
The first step is to cut up the fabric. The trick is to get cut as even as possible as this will affect the end product.
Mixing Your Resin and Covering the Fabric
We recommend you lay baking paper as a base to stack the micarta on and to make sure the micarta doesn't stick to the wood & clamps.
Make sure to carefully read the instructions for the resin you are planning to use. Use scales to measure the parts if the resin is measured by weight or use measuring cups if measured by volume. If you are measuring by volume and want a reusable measuring cup, look online for measuring cups made of silicone as they are easier to clean.
Make sure you put a nice covering of resin on each bit of fabric and make sure the fabric is flat without any wrinkles as they will affect your end product.
After you've evenly covered all your fabric pieces and placed a sheet of baking paper between each set, put in between two pieces of wood and clamp. Remember not to over clamp and not to under clamp.
Checking Out Your End Product
After the resin is fully set (look at the documentation that came with the resin you brought to see the set time), you can unclamp the micarta and clean up the edges. We use a bandsaw for this.
As you can see making fabric micarta can be super easy and this is the best way we've found to do it.
Super easy, cheap and you get a great end product.
The Karambit was a mix of other micarta and some of the stuff we made in the video.
