Make Your Own Pebble Time Charger

Got the Pebble Time, but forgot to buy an additional charging cable for your car?
Your original charging cable died on you and you need another cable immediately?

Follow these simple steps to make a Pebble Time charger using materials found around the house. You will need the following tools:

  1. a pencil
  2. a box cutter knife
  3. sticky tape
  4. an elastic band
  5. a ruler
  6. an old USB cable that you don't mind cutting up

Cut the Pencil

  1. If your pencil is sharpened, cut off the end so that it is flat.
  2. Place the box cutter on the point where you want to cut and apply light, but firm pressure. Then rotate the pencil back and forth for the blade to dig into the wood.
  3. Cut two blocks off the pencil roughly half an inch long. Make one block roughly 1 millimeter longer than the other.
  4. Using the box cutter, slowly scrape away the wood at the tip of each block, exposing about a quarter of an inch of graphite lead.

Position the Pencil Leads

  1. Place the two blocks next to each other and measure the distance between the two graphite leads. It will measure more than 6 millimeters between the center points of each lead.
  2. Now cut off a thin layer of wood off the sides of both blocks, until the two graphite leads measure 6 millimeters when placed side by side. This should correspond to the first and third metallic ports on the back of the watch.
  3. Place the two blocks side by side and tape them together.

Cut the Wire

  1. Cut off one end of the USB cable and strip off the plastic.
  2. Place the box cutter on the outer plastic and apply light pressure to score a ridge around the plastic. Then pull off the plastic using your fingers making sure the tear happens on the ridge.
  3. Strip off the plastic on the red and black wires (using the same method above) leaving about three quarters to one inch of wire exposed.

Wrap the Wire on the Leads

  1. Wrap the red wire (live wire) around the longer graphite lead.
  2. Wrap the black wire (ground wire) around the shorter graphite lead.
  3. Secure the cable against the side of the wood block with an elastic band, so that the wires don't pull off easily when the cable is tugged.

Test the Charger

  1. Rest your Pebble Time watch on the graphite leads and make sure it lines up with the first and third metallic port on the back of the watch. The third port is recessed into the watch, so it should correspond to the longer graphite pin.
  2. Make sure both leads are resting against the metallic port to ensure a good connection. If one lead is not making good contact, shorten the other lead by drawing with it until a piece of paper.
  3. Now plug in the USB port to a power source and charge away.
