Create an interactive poster with sound! You can do ANY topic, you are simply limited by your imagination and the amount of inputs you have on Makey Makey!

Supplies

1 Makey Makey kit for each poster/group: https://makeymakey.com/products/makey-makey-kit

Printed color image or image created by you or students

A piece of cardboard or box lid (or foamcore, something sturdy)

Glue stick

labels

sharpie

Scissors

xacto knife or sharp point to pierce cardboard

Brass fasteners

I have also attached the image I created in Canva, if you choose to create this same poster!

Setting Up Poster

First, determine what the topic of your poster will be. This is a poster for air masses in North America.

Next, glue your image to the backing, whether it is cardboard or a box lid.

Third you will pierce a hole in each location you would like to "speak" the information.

Lastly, insert a brass fastener through each hole.

Attaching Alligator Clips and Label Them

Flip over your cardboard and you are going to spread the "wings" of each brass fastener.

Now attach one end of an alligator clip to each of the brass fasteners, making sure you have a good connection. Also, make sure none of the fasteners are directly touching any other metal on the back of the poster. If they are, you can insulate them from each other with tape.

Next step is optional, but I recommend labeling what each brass fastener represents and then folding a label around each of the alligator clips and labeling them with a code or a name to remind you while the poster is flipped over. Many people (students and adults) begin to get confused/frustrated when they are trying to find the correct wire for each "button"

Also, on the back of the label I add which input they are going in, for example the orange alligator clip says "W" on the back because it is attached to the "W" input on the Makey Makey. this makes it easier/quicker to reassemble the device.

Attaching the Jump Wires and Alligator Clips

  1. Find the red cord that goes with your MakeyMakey and plug it into the board. Attach the USB end into a USB port on your computer.
  2. Place 1 jump wire (short white wires in kit) into each of the holes labeled WASDFG (I also labeled the alligator clips each with one of those letters in step 2)
  3. Attach each alligator clip to one of the jump wires (the one with the matching letter IF you labeled them). Make sure none of the wires are touching/crossed.

  1. Go to this link to begin an interactive poster: https://apps.makeymakey.com/poster/ IMPORTANT: IF YOU NEED TO WORK ON IT IN SEPARATE SESSIONS, MAKE SURE TO DOWNLOAD THE FILE BY CLICKING THE DOWNLOAD BUTTON ON MAKEY MAKEY. You can re-upload it during your next session to continue working on it, but it will not save online. Also, you must re-download when you finish!
  2. Click on the W button to record the information for the brass fastener attached to W. I also snipped a close up of each airmass to "zoom in" (as pictured). Record the information by clicking on the "Record" button and holding it down until you finish.
  3. Click on the "Upload" button to upload an image.
  4. Repeat this process for each of your buttons.
  5. REMEMBER TO DOWNLOAD YOUR ZIP FILE WHEN FINISHED! (or any time you take a break or need to close the window). This is the only way to retrieve your material!
  6. Now you are ready to test it! Attach another alligator clip to "Earth" as pictured above (I used the dark green clip). Hold one end of the clip in your hand and touch the button to trigger the poster. Here is an example video of me using the poster: https://youtube.com/shorts/WDCYV8Dtq88

Now go and MakeyMakey! It is a really great and fun interactive tool!
