Make an All-Natural Toothpaste
You might want to use a toothpaste with ingredients you can trust. It's next to impossible to identify all the ingredients from mainstream toothpastes, and many of the ingredients have health concerns.
Your best bet is to use as natural of ingredients as you can.
You can find many recipes on the web. Here's a concoction I've come up with that is both tasty and simple.
Finding the ingredients should be pretty easy. Most towns should, and cities do have places where you can find these ingredients. From grocery stores, health food stores, and even pharmacies.
The coconut oil can be either virgin, or filtered (no smell of coconut), depending on your preference. It has many health benefits.
The baking soda can be any reputable brand.
The Sea Salt probably shouldn't be the pink type as it contains small grains of sand, (it's safe for ingestion, but abrasive). I am using this Mediterranean Sea Salt.
The Peppermint Drops, though optional, do give a nice flavor to the toothpaste. If you wish, you can use another flavor, such as Cinnamon, or others.
The Stevia Powder is to make it sweeter, for those used to conventional toothpaste, although I don't bother as the peppermint is strong enough to make it rather unnecessary.
The Myrrh Extract has many health benefits, including Antimicribial and Antiviral properties.
Ingredients
Coconut oil
Baking Soda
Sea Salt
Peppermint Drops (optional)
Or Cinnamon Oil (optional)
Stevia Powder (optional)
Myrrh Extract (optional)
Supplies
Small Mason Jar (or other suitable container)
Spoon for mixing
Fill Jar Half Way With Softened Coconut Oil
I fill the jar about half way so there's room to add the dry ingredients and to have room for mixing.
Add Ingredients
4 Teaspoons of Baking Soda
1 Teaspoon of Sea Salt
30 drops of Peppermint Oil (or Cinnamon Oil)
If you're using Stevia Powder and/or Myhrr Extract, you can add them now.
Stir Until Smooth
Stirring should only take a minute or two, depending on how stiff your coconut oil is. Mine was relatively soft and I didn't have to warm it. If you've warmed your oil up too much and it's become liquid, you'll have to keep stirring until it solidifies. (Tip: you can place it in a dish or sink of cool water.)
Add Extra Coconut Oil
You can top up the jar if you want, the toothpaste will also be less gritty.
Mix Until Homogenous
Once you've stirred the mixture long enough (about a minute), the mixture should be well mixed.
Wipe the Mouth of the Jar Clean
Use a handy cloth, paper towel or tissue to clean the rim of the jar.
Add Lid to Jar
You're almost done.
Label and Date the Lid
Now that you've completed the toothpaste, you're ready to use it.
To use, either scoop some onto your toothbrush, or you can dip it in the jar if you're the only user. (Tip: make a jar for everyone in the family. You can use different mixtures depending on their tastes and flavor preference.)
