Make a Reversible Pendant Necklace From a Wooden Spoon

Here is a way to make, unique jewelry with everyday household items and basic craft materials.

Wood cutting tool
Acrylic paint
Paintbrush
Mod Podge
Foam brush
Paper towels
Water
Twine, cord, or rope
Painter’s tape
X-acto knife or etching/carving tool
Glue

Use an appropriate tool to cut the handle off of the spoon. I used the pictured hedge clippers, because that is what I had on hand, but a saw would be more effective. Then, sand the the surface of the spoon. I didn’t get a clean cut with the hedge clippers, but any imperfections won’t be visible later when they are covered.

Cut a strip of painter’s tape lengthwise into halves until you have 8 small strips. Trace the spoon onto a sheet of scrap paper and plan your design, testing how the layout and paint colors will look. Then, apply painter’s tape to the spoon and paint according to the design plan. To achieve the wood stained look, I used a clean damp paper towel to wipe away the paint separately for each color and wiped it with a dry paper towel. You must wipe off the paint as soon as you apply it to avoid drying. Feel free to skip this if you prefer solid colors over the wood stained look. Allow to dry and apply a thin coat of Mod Podge with a foam brush to seal.

Plan design, draw it onto the spoon with a pencil, etch/carve the design into the spoon with an X-acto knife or other appropriate tool. (I believe I broke the tip of the blade while etching, but I now realize that X-acto makes a knife specifically for wood carving). Blow away any excess wood shavings. Paint the spoon and use a damp paper towel to rub away the paint and wipe dry. Apply a thin coat of Mod Podge with a foam brush to seal.

Fold the cord in half, wrap the looped end around the pendant, and pull the loose ends through the loop as pictured. Secure the loop to the side of the pendant with glue. Then, pull the loose ends back in the opposite direction to wrap it upward around the pendant. Secure the cord to the top with glue.

I painted an ocean wave at the bottom to try to make the etched design have the effect of writing in the sand. If you add extra details with paint, just remember to seal it with Mod Podge.
