Hello, today i'm going to show you how i transform an old notebook cover to a badge holder.

English is not my mother tongue so don't hesistate to correct me if you see any mistakes

Why?

The end of the school year is approaching, so many of our notebook covers are damaged and can no longer be used next year, and are discarded most of the time. And at the start of the school year, your kids have new badges or cards for the bus, canteen or to enter in the school..., that always have on them; and in their your pocket there is a risk that it will fall, so they need new badge holder. So we are going to use the notebook instead of throwing it away and you don't need to buy a badge holder.

A free and a green project.

All materials that I use in this project are recycled materials or leftovers from things I've used before. It avoid the burning of the notebook cover, which product a lot of harmful gases.

Supplies

To do this project, you need:

  • an used notebook cover
  • a pair of scissors
  • a pen or a marker pen
  • a ruler
  • a card to be our witness card
  • any hard rope: I use pelota because it is the stiffest i had.
  • any gel glue.

Be careful: some gel glues are corrosive or require ventilation to use them so be sure to read the intructions manual before using. The gel glue that i use need just to be use outdoors so I went out of house to use it.

Card Measure

First, take your witness card and measure it to know the size of your badge holder.

For me, it measures 86mm by 54mm. So we will round them to 9cm and 6cm.

Notebook Cover

Then, I take the notebook cover, I remove the notebook and I see how many parts are reusable. Here, there are 4 parts reusable.

Separation of Parts

After looking at the parts you can have, cut then to have the parts that you need, here I have four parts, so i'm going to show you two differents badge holder: vertical and horizontal. So you can choose according to your taste, or you can make both.

Horizontal Position

So first, we are going to draw the horizontal badge holder:

  • using the pen or the marker pen, draw as in the picture above: 9 cm in width and 16 cm in length.
  • then separate the lenght into 3 parts: 6cm, 6cm and 4cm.
  • finally add a margin of 1cm for the collage area.

Vertical Position

Then, we are going to draw the vertical badge holder:

  • using the pen or the marker pen, draw as in the picture above: 6 cm in width and 22 cm in length.
  • then separate the lenght into 3 parts: 9cm, 9cm and 4cm.
  • finally add a margin of 1cm for the collage area.

Cut

Finally cut and normally, it gives you the shapes as in the picture above according to what you have done; at the left, it is the vertical badge holder, and at the right it is the horizontale badge holder, and we are halfway there.

Hole

For the safety: take the part with 4 cm in length, it's the same part on both, and round the end to avoid sharp ends, wich can hurt.

Then I add a hole in the center to enter the rope.

Normally, it gives you as the image above.

Pasting1

First, I fold along the marks of the pen or the marker pen except with the end that has been rounded.

I past the vertical first, so I add gel glue in both collage area, and I fold the badge holder, then I let it dry, and normally, it gives as the third picture above.

Pasting2

Then, I repeat to all of the badge holder that I made:

  • I add glue in both collage area and fod it, and i let it dry.

And, normally, it gives you like in the second picture above. And it's almost done.

Rope

Finally, I take the pelota (take the rope that you choose), and I take one that suits me well, ie up to my abdomen. Then I cut it and I repeated it four times.

I put it in the hole at the end, and I tie it. So normally, it gives you like in the fourth picture above.

Now, you're finally done. It looks beautiful. Normally it is stiff, but if it isn't, think about changing your gel glue. Some people say that it can hurt, but if you round the end well, there is no risk of injury.

I hope that this instructable helped you. Thank you for reading it and bye.
