Make Your Own Jet from Fallout!

In this tutorial I'll show you how to make a prop version of some jet from Fallout, perfect for any wasteland wanderers or cosplayers looking for some extra accessories!

For this project you will need:

  • A small plastic bottle
  • Worbla
  • Craft foam
  • Modelling paste
  • Sand paper
  • Glue gun
  • Heat gun
  • Primer
  • Gloss sealer
  • Wood glue/ PVA
  • Paint

By the canister I mean the red part of the inhaler. For this bit you take the plastic bottle and round off the top with Worbla scraps (if you've never worked with Worbla before it's a thermoplastic that you can heat up, shape, and it will solidify back into plastic). Depending on the shape of your bottle you may need to add a rounded or cone shape near the rim too like I did.

Once you're happy with the shape you can coat it in a layer of modelling paste which hardens to a plaster-like consistency. Once dried you can sand this smooth and any gaps can be filled by smearing on more paste. By doing this the bottle looks like one cohesive shape.

Craft the Inhaler

To craft the inhaler I cut a piece of craft foam knowing I wanted the inhaler to be about 3.5 inches long, by marking the folds I needed to make I eyeballed the width though I believe it was about 2.5 inches. I then sandwiched the foam in between some Worbla sheets and heated it up before cutting it out and bending my folds into shape. There are 6 folds to be made all together but do find a reference picture if you need help.

Once that was complete I measured 2/3rds of the way along the inhaler with craft foam and wrapped it to form that second layer.

Once it had cooled I added scraps of Worbla to the back to try and round off one end, I ended up using hot glue to complete this as it ended up looking smoother.

To finish the body I stuck the inhaler and canister together and wrapped it in a collar of Worbla.

Prime, Paint, and Seal

Before adding primer I coated the whole thing in a layer of wood glue to seal off the foam and give it a more even surface. I then sprayed it with white primer and once that had dried I moved on to painting. I started (quite messily) with the red but then used some masking tape to help keep things neater when I did the white and grey. I did about three coats of each paint.

In the reference pictures I've seen the canister always looks much glossier than the inhaler so I sealed them differently. I used gloss spray paint for the canister and wood glue for the inhaler.

You're Done!
