Make Your Own Dress Using a Pattern!

For the Fall 2022 Textiles CoP, I made this dress! It's Dress A from New Look 6696, with a few modifications for comfort!

Supplies

Typically, you can follow the instructions on the back of the pattern envelope regarding what to grab for your project! However, I would always recommend getting more fabric. For example, Dress A needs about 2.875 yards of 60" fabric, but I purchased 4 yards. You never know when you will need to remake a part!

Along with this, if you want to make changes to a part of the dress, such as transforming the cap sleeves to bishop sleeves, you will need to account for the extra fabric (and supplies) you will need for that!

Examine Your Pattern! Decisions, Decisions, Decisions!

Looking at your pattern, decide which dress you're going to do! Decide on any modifications, write down any extra supplies you'll need, and order your supplies! Make sure you order the right colors of things!

Always Make a Mockup!

Make a mockup of the dress! This ensures that the size of the dress you picked was the right one, and ensures you'll be able to practice any new techniques and make mistakes before the final product!

Make the Actual Dress!

Following ALL instructions for the patterns and using what you've learned during the mockup, make your dress! Make sure to try on the pieces as you make them, to ensure it fits, and so you can make alterations before the final product!

Add Personal Flair!

Make sure to add something that signifies it as yours, like a patch or an embroidered signature!
