Make Your Own Discus Food
Discus are cichlids which do best on a specialized, high-protein diet. Many simply won't eat dry prepared foods.
While commercial frozen foods are available, they are expensive.
Here's an easy way to make great food for your fish that will save you money. Even better, all my discus love this food!
Note: Take care introducing any new food to your fish.
Supplies

- Note: Most food processors only come with a coarse grating disc.
- You can purchase fine grating discs for most major brands such as Cuisinart
- Silicone ice cube trays (3 - Buy two sets. They are sold in packs of two)
- Measuring cup (2-cup or larger)
- Large mixing bowl
- Whisk
- Spatula
Food Ingredients
- 4 oz. Frozen, Raw Peeled and Deveined Shrimp
- 4 oz Frozen, Uncooked Tuna
- 1/3 cup Repashy Super Green Gel Food Powder
- 2/3 cup boiling water
What does the Repashy Gel Mix do?
The gel mix binds the food together and also adds nutritious spirulina and other vitamins to the food.
Repashy Foods are well regarded in the tropical fish hobby. I have been using them for a number of years.
Grate Ingredients
Place the frozen shrimp in the feed tube of the food processor and grate them.
Cut the tuna steaks into strip just small enough to fit into the feed tube of the food processor and grate them.
Pick/chop Large Pieces
Most food processors will allow some bigger chunks to bypass the grating disc.
Remove the grating disc from the food processor and pick through to find any large chunks.
You can throw them away or you can hand chop them on a cutting board.
Move all the grated/chopped seafood to a large mixing bowl.
Prepare Gel Mix
Microwave or boil the water and add the Repashy mix to the water.
Stir with a whisk.
Combine Gel Mix and Seafood
Add the gel mix to the grated seafood mixture. You will need to move quickly before the gel mix sets.
Fold in with a spatula and then mix thoroughly with a whisk.
Press Food Into Silicone Tray
Use the spatula to move some of the seafood mixture into the tray.
Press into each cavity of the tray, but do not overfill. The top surface of the tray should be flat.
Wrap and Freeze
Wrap each tray in plastic wrap and place in the freezer for at least four hours.
Remove Food From Tray
Remove the filled trays from the freezer.
Twist and flex the tray to remove the food.
Store in a airtight container in the freezer, taking out only enough for one feeding at a time.
