Make It Real: Student Design Challenge Gym

Screen Shot 2021-06-21 at 8.58.40 PM.png

Today I am going to explain the details involved in creating the gym that I made in the first student design challenge. This will include a building site, materials cost, safety procedures, and more. Enjoy! And I hope this helps. Thank you for setting up all of these design challenges for students!

Where to Build

I chose Hialeah Ct LOT 68, Erie, PA 16506 as my building site because it is a busy area where a lot of people can easily get to the gym. Its cost is $71,900 for 31014.72 square feet.

Safety

Everybody will be required to wear hards hats and construction vests on the work site to lower the risk of injury, and everybody will have to be trained to work on construction sites so that it is a safe environment. Also, there will be traffic cones and warning tape all around the construction site to prevent people who are not working on the site from coming in.

Construction Site

On the construction site on google maps, the yellow line is around the building site. The red line is where the building materials go, the blue line is where the heavy machinery goes, and the purple is the site trailer and muster point. I didn't know this before, but a muster point is where employees, construction workers, and visitors can gather in case of emergency. I believe that this is where the site is that is for sale. You will have to cut down a couple of trees, but you can replant them somewhere else to help keep the Earth's trees alive.

The Foundation

As per Josiah Miller's gym plan, you need to build the pool into the foundation. The foundation will be made out of concrete, as that is one of the strongest materials for the foundation.

The Metal Frame

Screen Shot 2021-06-21 at 8.37.15 PM.png

Next the metal frame is built. It is necessary to keep the building from falling down.

The Wooden Frame

The wooden frame goes up next. It is necessary to install a lot of other things like electricity and plumbing and drywall.

Bricks

Next the bricks go in to keep the building standing. You could also use a different material.

The Roof

Screen Shot 2021-06-21 at 8.41.32 PM.png

The roof makes sure that rain cannot get into the building. there are places for solar panels to help the earth be more healthy.

The Windows

Put in lots of windows so that you do not have to use as much electricity. Also, studies have shown that sunlight makes people happier overall.

AC :P

When you are in a gym, you have to have AC so that people can be cool while they are exercising and get cooler after they are done.

Solar Panels

Screen Shot 2021-06-21 at 8.44.49 PM.png

Put in solar panel to cut down on electricity costs and to help the earth.

Electricity and Plumbing

Screen Shot 2021-06-21 at 8.45.46 PM.png

Electricity and plumbing is important so that people can see and so that they can shower and use toilets and stuff like that.

Insulation and Drywall

Insulation is very important so that the heat stays in when it is cold outside, and the cool stays in when it is hot outside. Drywall is important to cover things like the plumbing and electricity and so that we can paint the walls if we want.

Lighting and Fans

Screen Shot 2021-06-21 at 8.50.31 PM.png

Fans are important to circulate the AC, and lighting is important when the solar panels do not have sunlight to supply them.

Flooring and Furnishings

Screen Shot 2021-06-21 at 8.51.45 PM.png

The flooring on the basketball court shows where the lines are, and the flooring everywhere else is important so people aren't stepping on grass. The parking lot is important so that people can park and go in.

Fill the Gym

here is a (not exhaustive) list of things that I think could go inside the gym:

-pool

-track

-weights

-treadmills

-electric bikes

and outdoors

-football field

-tennis court

-soccer field
