Make It Real Design Challenge - Rehab Gym
This instructable explains my Rehab Gym Design.
Understanding the Problem: Idea Board
The problem posed in this design challenge is to create a rehab gym that helps the community that will use it. The building is used for people to workout in and it needs to have good training and rehab equipment available. A lot of engineering needs to put into the building to make it the best and the safest for the people. The gym needs to include the same equipment similar to other rehab gyms, but even more to make the best gym for the people.
Research
When I did my research for my gym, the first thing I looked for was the best equipment that belonged in a rehab gym. The best equipment for a rehab gym would be treadmills, exercise balls, pulley devices, exercise mats and weights. This will give the people a variety of things to do. Next, I looked into the best, most comfortable size for a gym due to the location I am working with. When doing my research I found that 12,500 square feet would fit everything that I need to put in the gym, and it would fit on the location I picked. The next thing I looked for, was what could be done to keep a gym clean and to keep everyone socially distanced. The best things to do would be to clean equipment after using it, have everyone who´s visiting stay six feet apart, and lastly, have a contact less entrance, to help with the social distancing. Lastly while doing my research, I had to take the overall architectural design into consideration. For a gym I feel high ceilings, large windows, and a open concept would help create a clean gym design.
Brainstorm and Develop a Solution
Create a Model
I chose a one story building design to give easy access to every part of the gym on one single floor. The building is on a long platform because of everything being on one floor. It has tall ceilings and big windows to give a modern clean look and a nice environment for the people. The dimensions are 50 ft wide by 250 ft long by 20 ft tall.
In the front of the building is the restrooms. I put them near the front you will see them when you walk in, and won't be confused as to where they are. Next, in the entrance I added a cafe so after people work out, swim, or have physical therapy lessons, they can grab a smoothie, protein shake, or nutritional snack. By the entrance made the most since so its out in the open where its easy to see. The cafe and entrance will have a modern open concept layout for it too feel fresh and big.
After the entrance you go straight into the work out area. Since it will be a popular area, it being by the entrance will get people right into the work out area and then right out when they are done. I would like for this gym to be an easy flowing gym where everything is easy to find. The work out area will have high ceilings and will have large windows to bring in a lot of natural light. Then after the work out area comes the studios/classrooms for yoga classes, and other classes. I included four different classrooms for multiple classes to happen at one time. They will be simple classrooms with exercise mats in them.
Next is the basketball hoop area. This isn't a full court but it is an area for mini games to take place for people to stay active. This area can also be used for other things, because it is a nice open room with 20 ft ceilings. I made it have tall ceilings and an open feel for it to be a multipurpose area.
A hallway off of the multipurpose area takes you to a pool, rehab room, and a staff room. Starting with the pool, it is for rehab purposes. It is the perfect size for a person and a trainer to use to practice anything the person needs to work on. I put it near the back of the building because it wont be as popular as the work out areas or the classrooms. After the pool room comes the rehab room which will have beds and mats and exercise balls. It is put in the back of the building so that it will be a separate area from main hub. Last, is the staff room. It is in the back because no one but the staff members will and in the staff room will be tables for the staff members.
Iterate the Design
I had to change my building design after I started modeling because for all that I needed to up in the building would not give enough space for each area. I added 50 more feet to my building. I also changed the interior layout because it didn't feel as open as I wanted it to feel. I made the hallways wider and I made the workout area bigger so the social distancing worked out.
