Make It Real Design Challenge

Hello! My name is Mason Wolford and I am a sophomore at Jonathan Alder High School. I am planning on designing a new gym for James Devlin.

Defining the Problem.

File_000 (7).jpeg

For this project former New England Football star James Develin is wanting to build a gym in his area. He needs us to help him design a functional gym that meets all his needs. One of his needs was to make a gym not only for athletes and for people wanting to get in shape, but also for people who need physical therapy for whatever they have been through. Some of the structural request he had were high ceiling for a potential bleacher run, and natural light. he also shared his interest in aquatics, maybe even adding a lazy river throughout the gym.

Research

Before I began looking into creating a design for this gym, I began to look at different elements in my design and how I can fit them all together into one functional gym. First I thought of the structure. I need to find a place big enough to fit all the things James wants, but small enough to where it will fit in a big city. I will also need to look at a place with tall ceiling as that was one of his requests. The things I want to include in this gym is first a sections of weight machines to give people a good gym feel. I also want to add a rehab section to meet Jame's idea of helping people rehab for their injuries. On top of that in sort of a loft area I would add conditioning machines such as treadmills and bikes. Another part of the gym I would like to add would be a hygiene/relax station. This would include bathrooms and lockers rooms with showers. But also a hot and cold tub to incorporate aquatics like James wanted, and give customers a better experience. I believe costumers will value the convenience of having almost every aspect of fitness in one area all ready for them to use. On to structure, I would want to put most of the appliances that involve water and plumbing together to eliminate the number of pipes. Due to the Covid pandemic, I would want to make sure that everything in the gym is well spaced out to keep everyone safe and feeling comfortable. I would also put out sanitizing wipes and encourage costumers to clean the equipment when done using.

Brainstorm

Now that I have all my research done. It is time to get some ideas on how I would like to use that research in my design. First off with size, to fit in a town environment and be big enough to meet James needs, I went with a 80ftx80ft base. I then will add four 35ftx35ft squares in each corner with 10 ft hallways in the middle. These four rooms will have the rehab, Weights, bleachers, hygiene, and aquatics like James wanted. For height, I wanted two story high ceilings or about 20 ft. I then will add a 35ftx35ft loft over one of my corner rooms so I can put conditioning equipment up there. To meet James want of aquatics. I will put a room for a hot and cold tub to go into. Next to this, I will put a area for men's and women's bathrooms as well as showers. I also plan on putting a set of bleacher in my design to reach another one of James goal.

Design

My design can be broken into 5 main sections consisting of rehab, hygiene/aquatics, weights, conditioning, offices. These next steps will go into depth on each section.

Design-Rehab Room

First the rehab room. This room consists of 5 table for patients to get worked on, as well as a little office in the corner for the workers. second, is the hygiene. aquatics section. These rooms consists of men's and women's bathrooms with showers in both of them. This section also includes a hot in cold tub to help costumers relax and recover.Next, is the weight room. This room has the classic gym feel allowing costumers to work every part of their bodies. On top of that, we have the conditioning loft

Design-conditioning

On top of the weight room I made a lofted conditioning floor. This space has treadmills and bikes for people can get there cardio in while at the gym.

Design-Offices/Bleachers

For this space I wanted to first put in Jame's idea of bleachers. I had some more room so I put it a room with teo desks to help Jame's with the buisness side of the

Iterations

Through modeling my design I ran into a couple issues that I had with my Brainstorming and research. First, I did not have as much room as I would have hoped to make the bathrooms have the showers, lockers, and toilets that I wanted. On the flip side, I had some extra room next to the bleachers and decided I would add even more office space.

Overall

The idea for this design was to help James Devlin and his efforts in creating a personalized gym that fits all his wants. It was fun helping James and I wish him good luck.
