Make It Extreme's Crane
In this week’s video, we came up with the idea of making a crane in order to improve our ‘make it extreme’ shop and include another useful tool in our collection. The crane is a very useful tool in a workshop for multiple purposes such as lifting heavy objects that we need to work on as well as lifting things that we want to paint and according to each user’s needs and imagination its uses get multiplied. Therefore, we made our crane on our workbench in order to enable us to lift objects on it.
Metallic Framework
To start with, we primarily made a rectangular, metallic framework of 4 meters length and 76 cm height made out of square tubes with dimensions 60x60x2mm. Then, we filled the rectangular framework with square tubes’ pieces of 60x40x2 that were placed in a 45-degree slope at the right and left side of the rectangular framework and in this way we managed to form our netting. The purpose of the formation of this netting is to multiply its tolerance in lifting heavier loads as much as possible.
Carrying on with our construction, two metallic rails were placed on the framework, on which our winch of the crane will be moving forward and backward. Afterwards, we made another metallic, netting framework but smaller this time and we put 4 heavy, metallic wheels and an electric winch that is able to lift 500 kg on it.
Construction
The particular construction moves along the 4 meters framework in order to be able to lift objects from various positions at this length. If we wish, we could make it move in 4 different directions but in our case this wouldn’t work as our space in our workshop is limited so it can service our needs as it is.
Regarding the portable part of the crane was made with a slope so that the slope of our foundation will be counterbalanced and the weight of the objects will be exerted vertically as well as the loads will be allocated accordingly. Additionally, the portable part is inclined outwardly so that it won’t be removed from the rails regardless the weight of the load placed on it.
There is also, another safety valve that is located where the winchi is. To achieve this, we placed a metallic plate below the winch that will stop the drop of the winch in case the screws that support it get removed.
Video
Finally, we would like to declare that we are absolutely satisfied with our construction as our workshop’s potential has been increased. Now, we are able to lift a load and move it easily as the portable part of the crane slides in a very low power and combined to the ‘make it extreme’ work bench, the usefulness of our space is amazing.
