MagnoLamp - magnet switch lamp

Introducing the MagnoLamp: a magnetic desk lamp that can be powered by either a DC adapter or its built-in battery. This innovative lamp operates by simply bringing two magnets together to switch on the LED strip. What sets this build apart is its simplicity, as it doesn't require a microcontroller or complex mechanisms, making it accessible for anyone to construct. The ability to adjust the lamp's angle in multiple axes enhances its versatility and adaptability to different situations. It enables users to precisely direct the light exactly where it is needed, whether it's for focused task lighting or broader ambient illumination.

The concept behind its functionality is straightforward, relying on the fundamental property of magnets: attraction. When two magnets are brought close to each other, they naturally attract. In the case of the MagnoLamp, this attraction pulls a string attached to the magnets, which in turn activates a limit switch located inside the lamp's bottom compartment. The mechanism within the compartment facilitates the closure of the circuit by pressing the limit switch button.

To construct the MagnoLamp, most of the parts are 3D printed and designed using Fusion 360. This Instructable will guide you through the entire building process of the MagnoLamp. So let's dive in and get started!

The 3D models for the MagnoLamp were created using Fusion 360 and printed using the Ender 3 V2 Neo 3D printer, without the need for any supports. However, for certain small parts, adhesive supports may be necessary to ensure proper adhesion to the 3D printer plate.

The wood side cover part serves the purpose of covering the sides of the lamp with a wooden finish.

For your convenience, I have included a Fusion 360 file (magnolamp.f3d) that you can edit according to your specific requirements. Feel free to customize it as needed.

I obtained an LED strip from a local electronics market at a very affordable price, less than a dollar. To protect and enhance its appearance, I designed and created a cover for the strip. Additionally, I attached a power jack to the strip for convenient power connection. It is important to ensure the correct wiring and soldering of the wires to the power jack. To do this, I recommend performing a quick Google search for the specific power jack you have and following the appropriate wiring instructions.

Once the LED strip and power jack are prepared, I proceeded to assemble the various 3D printed parts for the lamp. Following the instructions and images provided earlier, I joined the light holder part to the lamp using superglue. Finally, all the 3D printed components are carefully assembled together to complete the construction of the lamp, as depicted in the accompanying pictures.

The MagnoLamp boasts a highly practical mechanism that empowers users to easily alter the direction of the light projection in three axes. This remarkable feature allows for precise adjustments in the tilt, rotation, and swivel angles of the lamp, enabling optimal lighting orientation and adaptability.

To prepare the wooden components for the MagnoLamp, follow these steps:

  1. Cut the wood according to the provided dimensions.
  2. Take one side of the wood and grind it at a 45-degree angle.
  3. Insert the smaller wooden part into the vertical section and the larger part into the angled section, ensuring a snug fit.
  4. Securely bond the wooden parts together using super glue.

Next, proceed with the assembly of the lamp as follows:

  1. Attach the middle frame to the bottom base plate using the provided studs. Make sure to align them properly.
  2. Bond the middle frame and bottom base plate together using super glue. Remove any supports used for adhesive purposes.

Refer to the accompanying images for visual guidance throughout the assembly process.

You can now attach the LED strip part that was previously assembled. Follow these steps:

  1. Take the LED strip part that you created, which includes the cover and the attached power jack.
  2. Position the LED strip along the designated area on the lamp where it is intended to be installed.
  3. Ensure that the LED strip is aligned properly and fits securely within the designated space.
  4. Use an appropriate adhesive, such as super glue, to affix the LED strip to the lamp body.
  5. Apply the adhesive carefully, making sure not to obstruct the LED lights or any essential connections.
  6. Allow sufficient time for the adhesive to dry and set according to the manufacturer's instructions.
  7. After this, super glue the wooden side covers on the both side of the wood.

Once the adhesive has fully cured, the LED strip should be firmly attached to the MagnoLamp.

To proceed with the magnet assembly, follow these steps:

  1. Begin by attaching the string inside the 3D printed parts according to the provided images. Use adhesive or glue to secure the string permanently in place. Repeat this process for both halves of the magnet assembly.
  2. Insert the magnets into the designated slots within one of the halves. Then, carefully position the other half on top, ensuring the magnets align properly.
  3. Apply adhesive or glue to secure the two halves together, forming a complete magnet assembly.

Moving on to the next step:

  1. Take the two magnet assemblies you just created and pass the string through the hole in the front of the base plate, guiding it through the trigger mechanism. Measure the length of string required to achieve the desired height for the magnet. Tie a knot and cut off any excess string.
  2. For the upper half of the lamp, drill a hole in the top wood piece, directly above the bottom hole in the base plate. Pass the string through this hole and attach the magnets. Pull the string from the other side until the limit switch turns on (you can listen for the clicking sound). Ensure the calibration is perfect, making any necessary adjustments. Finally, tie a knot to secure the string in place.

By following these instructions, you will have successfully assembled the magnet components of the MagnoLamp, ensuring proper placement and calibration of the limit switch mechanism.

To complete the construction of the MagnoLamp, follow these final steps:

  1. Begin by placing the base bottom-most part in position.
  2. Insert the 3S lithium battery into the battery holder, ensuring it is securely in place.
  3. Proceed to solder the power jack with the negative and positive terminals of the battery holder, ensuring the correct polarity. Take care to make clean and secure solder connections.
  4. Once the soldering is complete, close the base bottom by attaching the previously assembled base plate. Use screws to securely fasten the two parts together.
  5. Ensure that all screws are tightened properly to provide stability and support for the lamp structure.

With these steps, you have successfully completed the construction of the MagnoLamp. Now you can enjoy the functionality and convenience of your magnetically switching desk lamp.

You can either use it with built-in battery or external power supply.
