Magic Color Changing Cocktail

A classic gin & tonic cocktail is a refreshing Summer drink, but its appearance leaves a bit to be desired. Here I will show you how to jazz up this iconic drink with Butterfly Pea Tea ice cubes. Amaze your guests as their drinks naturally change color right before their eyes!

Supplies

6 Butterfly Pea Flowers

6 ounces boiling water

Ice cubes tray

2 ounces gin

5 ounces tonic water

1 ounce sweetened lime juice

Brew Tea

Boil water using a kettle.

Add Butterfly Pea Flowers in a 1:1 ratio between flowers and ounces of water.

Let steep for 5-10 minutes.

Make Ice Cubes

Wait for tea to cool (move to fridge to speed up this step)

Then, transfer to silicon ice cubes trays and place in freezer. Cubes should be completely frozen in about 4-5 hours, but it’s best to leave them freezing overnight.

Crush Ice Cubes

Once the cubes are frozen, crush them into smaller chunks so they melt and dye your drink faster.

Make Gin & Tonic

The gin & tonic recipe I used was 2 ounces of gin to 5 ounces of tonic, but feel free to adjust the ratio to taste.

(Optional) I personally like sweetening the drink and adding a little lime flavor by adding 1 ounce of sweetened lime juice.

Enjoy!

Add your crushed ice to the gin & tonic and stir gently. Then sit back and watch the magic unfold! (See attached video.)

The best part of this recipe is that these ice cubes will color any acidic drink, so if your kids want one too; drop some ice into their lemonade so they don’t feel left out!
