Madd Hatter Costume

unnamed.jpg

For this Madd Hatter costume, I wanted to capture the true Madd hatter like in the live action movie. I chose to upcycle most of the materials I used in this project. I bought the neckties second hand, thrifted the button up, and used extra fabric and materials I had lying around.

Supplies

For the skirt:

  1. Neckties
  2. Sewing Machine
  3. Black Velcro
  4. 12" Zipper
  5. Black Elastic
  6. Sewing Scissors

Rest of the costume:

  1. White Button Down
  2. Brown Corset
  3. Black Top Hat
  4. Pink Ribbon
  5. Playing Cards
  6. Fun Jewry
  7. Boots or Doc Martins
  8. Makeup (optional)

Making the Skirt

Depending on your waist size will depend on how many neck ties it'll take to make the skirt.

  1. Sizing: decide how long you want your skirt to be, then cut 3 inches above the length you want (Make sure to place a clip or pin to the top of the tie so it doesn't start to unravel).
  2. Sewing: Take 2 of the ties and line them up next to each other under the foot, drop the foot and start slowly on a zigzag stich, go slow so you don't accidently put the stich on only one tie. Once you get to 2.5 inches above the end of the tie stop sewing then back stich. Set 2 aside for later to sew the zipper. Continue that until you get to the width of your waist. Cut off any excess from the waistline, so the skirt is the length you want it to be.
  3. Zipper: Take the 2 last ties and measure them and mark the length of where you want the skirt to be. Line the top of the ripper to the top of where you want the skirt to sit on your waist. Pin and line up the ripper to the tie, then sew a straight stich down the tie/zipper, stop after the zipper ends. Then line the other tie just like before and straight stich it down. Once both sides are sewn there is going to be a small gap between the ties so to help elevate this sew a small piece of fabric right after the ripper then continue the zigzag stich down the rest of the ties. Now sew the that into the rest of the skirt by lining it up and zigzag stitching it closed on one side then when closing the skirt unzip the zipper and fold back the opposite side as you sew the other zipper tie to the rest of the skirt.
  4. Final touches: Once your skirt is completely sewn so it'll fit on your hips and make sure it's the right length and that it won't fall of your hips. Now get the black elastic band and sew it onto the hem at the top of the skirt with a simple top stich, leave the side with the ripper open. Trim any extra lose thread off.

  1. Take the black top hat and cut a piece of ribbon that can wrap around the hat twice with a little extra to hang off the brim.
  2. Take the ribbon and wrap it around the base of the hat twice then tie it off on the front. Take your playing cards and cut 2 in half then put them behind the ribbon.

Completing the Costume

For the rest of the costume wear a white button down, with a brown corset on top. Then add the skirt under the button down but leave one corner out. Next put on your boots hat; then finish up with doing a Mad Hatter makeup look and add your jewelry.
