A simple way to make a mobile adjustable frequency dipole

Why a dipole instead of the usual monopole on a standard handheld tranceiver. I am not going to go into technicality of it which can be found elsewhere. Monopole depends on ground plane and you may have to place it near the ground unless you make radial element below it.

By using this dipole, you can have an off device antenna. You can hang it from a tree branch high above for increased communication distance. Just tie a rope to the horizontal white pvc pipe, throw the rope over a tree branch and pull,

After surfing the internet for some inspirations and to be a bit different I DIY this dipole traveller from TV rabbit antenna, connected to a Portable Digital SWR Meter and to my trusted Wouxun KG-UVD-1P..

You need an adapter to allow the male BNC connector to be connected to the original monopole antenna connector of the transceiver. The ready made dipole antenna can be purchase off the shelf.

I make it such a way it is a multi frequency antenna where we can tune it by lengthening and shortening the elements and testing the SWR to get the desire results. The length of the antenna can be calculated by this Dipole Calculator. I you do not have a SWR meter, just make a general length according to the middle of our intended bandwidth.

If I want to create a Yagi, I just connect a spare short pvc (with small side holes) in front of the driver element , put in a director and put in the reflector at the horizontal antenna holder, the length of these two subjected to the required frequency.Just a simple idea, inspired from the internet, modified, enhanced and localized and called Kit Dipole Sandang (Kidang)

Make sure you use the correct adapter to accept the male BNC of the external antenna coaxial cable (see photos)

Connection wise, A dipole have two elements, right and left or up and down, base on orientation. Connect the inner core conductor of the coaxial cable to one element of the dipole antenna and the braided conductor surrounding the inner core to the other element of the antenna which you can dismantle easily to make the connections.
