MAGIC THE GATHERING CARD CASE

My oldest son is into MAGIC THE GATHERING and has thousands of cards. He asked if I could build a card case. He gave me plans from a friend of his who built one. Of course, I tweaked mine a bit to make it special.

MATERIALS: I used 3/4" plywood, 1 x 2s, 1 x 4s, pallet wood, five 20" full extension drawer guides, a couple of hinges and wooden knobs.

Here are the plans I worked from. They are by Burton Hemlick. Here is what I did differently. I added an extra cubby for books on top. I added two drawers. I added two doors for the bottom section. I added feet.

I built 5 card storage drawers out of pallet wood and 1 x 2s. The cardboard boxes the Magic cards are stored in are certain sizes and for them to fit these drawers I followed the supplied plans.

I assembled the carcass and braced the back.

I printed some of the game's icons, cut them out and colored them with magic marker high-lighters. I glued the icons to wooden knobs and dipped them numerous times in polyurethane.

I covered the raw plywood edging with iron-on veneer edging.

I built the two drawers out of 1 x 4s and used 1/4" ply for the bottoms.

I made two doors using 1 x 2s for the rails and stiles, 1/4" ply for the inserts which are held in place with glue and glazing points.

I installed the drawer slides per the original plans

I knew the knobs would stick out beyond the face of the two doors so my plan was to cut holes at each knob in the stiles to let them stick through.

I used six blocks of wood as feet for the unit.

I added two decals to the doors. I will have to add catches or magnets to the doors and probably have to do some minor adjustments when I get it over to my son's house, but all-in-all I'd say he'll be happy.
