Luminescent Tray With Photo Made of Wood With Epoxy Resin
I made a lumicing tray with a vacation photo on a wood base, potted with epoxy resin, as a birthday gift for my daughter.
For this I used a phototransfer foil, the German name is "Wasserschiebefolie", which can be printed with a color inkjet printer. These foils are also available for laser printers.
It was actually very simple, the steps are described below. Of course, it doesn't have to be a tablet. It can just as well be a picture frame or something similar.
Supplies
You need:
Material:
plywood (8mm), Photo foil for printing (tranferfoil), plywood for the edge, epoxi resign, if like.. luminescent powder, self-adhesive veneer, glitter powder, wood glue, etc.
Tools:
Jigsaw, sandpaper, printer, etc.
Mark and Cut Out Round Tray
Mark round tray, cut out and sand the outside round with router or otherwise as accurately as possible.
Print and Transfer Image
- First, paint the wood on which the photo will be placed with transparent matte acrylic varnish.
- Then print the picture on the foil.
- The printed image also paint with acrylic varnish thin, so that the image is fixed.
- Allow to dry.
- Cut out the image to fit and transfer to the wood. (Be sure to put some water on the wood so that you can still move and correct the film on the water film.)
- Then squeeze out the water with a cloth roll.
Attach the Edge
- Difficult part: Now bring the edge, made of plywood 8mm x 50mm x ca.1200mm, and fit it around the tray.
- Glue it with wood glue.
- I also used a hot glue gun to fix for a short time.
- Let dry. If it is not tight, use the hot glue gun to seal the edge so that no epoxy leaks through the edge later.
Glue the Inner Edge With the Veneer
To glue the inner veneer, a hot air dryer is necessary
Mix Epoxy Resin, and Apply in Layers
- First apply glitter
- Mix neutral epoxy resin without color powder
- Mix a smaller amount with the epoxy resin with the fluorinating powder as well. Approx. 1 teaspoon per 200-300 ml.
- Fill only the outer area with neutral epoxy, and at the same time also the inner area above the image.
- A strip of 5cm should remain free.
- Fill this strip with the other epoxy resin.
- It will mix and give a smooth surface.
- A luminous frame will appear around the image.
- Allow to cure.
Apply the Outer Veneer
- Sand the outside smooth and apply the veneer
Apply the Edge Tape (self-adhesive) As a Finish.
Sand the edge smooth and apply the edge tape (self-adhesive) as a finish.
