Low Odor Zippo Lighter Fluid DIY
in this tutorial we will make affordable low odor lighter fluid.
for the ones who like to carry a zippo but do not like the smell the zippo fluid has.
the fluid will just be a mix of 2 things:
1/2 Naphta (white Gas)
you will find it under various brands and name
white fuel, naphta, camp fuel, essence F
this is basically the original lighter fluid before zippo changed it, and can be used alone.
it has basically same burning color,
same odor
same lighting property.
but it can take a bit longer to evaporate than regular zippo fluid.
we will use around 1/2 and 1/3 of naphta in our mix.
1/2 Denatured Alcohol
denatured alcohol is generally 90% alcohol and 5% methanol.
it is popular as stove fuel
when used alone
it is harder to light than lighter fluid
it has almost no smell when burning.
it burn with small and very hot blue clean flames, almost invisible , this can damage your lighter wick.
it evaporate really easily.
we will use around 1/2 and 2/3 in our mix.too much alcohol can reduce the life of your zippo wick.
note: you can use 90% alcohol only if you do not want to use denatured alcohol containing methanol but it will evaporate faster.
Final Result
the mix of 1/2 naphta and 1/2 alcohol create a very interesting result :
it reduce a lots the odor of zippo fluid
the evaporation is moderate.
it burn with some big pale yellow hot flames, a bit hotter than regular lighter fluid.
giving almost the effect of a modern butane lighter.
the only problem is, both liquid does not mix well and act a bit like water and oil and so you should shake it before filling .
