Long Lasting Christmas Tree

There's nothing worse then a brown Christmas tree! Here are a few tips, DO'S and DO NOT'S that will keep your tree fresher, longer, and well into the new year!!

Picking a Tree

Make sure you pick a good tree! here are a few tips:

  • Go to a cut-your-own tree farm. A fresh cut tree will last the longest.
  • When picking your tree, look for one with minimal browned needles. The last thing you need is a dying tree!
  • Make a nice, flat cut. This helps the tree soak up water nicely. (If your buying a pre-cut tree, cut the bottom 1/2 inch off the trunk to freshen it up!)
  • Don't forget to yell "TIMBER!!" as it falls. This doesn't actually help the longevity of the tree, but it's tons of fun!!

Water, Water, Water!

Your tree needs water, and lots of it! Make sure you:
  • Get it into water as soon as possible! The faster the better, but make sure you get it set up within the first 24 hours!
  • Check the water level often. A fresh cut tree soaks up a lot of water! You may need to feed it multiple times a day!
  • Adding sugar, or plant food to the water sounds great, but there isn't any actual data to to support that these "tricks" do anything. Just give it plain water. It's most natural!

The DO NOT'S

Here are a few things to DO NOT do:

  • DO NOT put it next to a fire place. Not only is it a fire hazard, but the heat will dry out the air, and your tree!
  • DO NOT put your tree next to a heater or radiator. Just like the fireplace, it drys out your tree.
  • DO NOT put your tree in front of a window or other drafty places! I know this one is hard, as many people like to display it in their living room windows. Not only does the cold draft dry out your tree, the sunlight does too!!

Here are a few tips to DO to make your tree glow with beauty into the new year:

  • DO use LED lights. They are safer, use less energy, and because they are a lot cooler, they don't dry out the tree!
  • DO use a humidifier. The extra moisture in the air helps battle drafts and keep your tree moist.
  • DO keep the temperature low and steady. Set your thermostat to no higher than 68 degrees F. If you keep it too warm..again..the dreadful drying...
