Live Edge TV Stand Wood Slab

All that project begin when I bought my new 65'' tv. I know all my inspiration would transfert in big amount of work ... I've learned so much during all the processes and encourage everyone to create their own.

It's always good to have a complete design before beginning your work ...

Unfortunatly, you will face deviation and or issues when you work with live edge wood. But still, having a general idea where you want to go, it's always the first step of a good work !

In my case, I've found my woodslab (Birch) in a local lumberjack company. They dry it and sell it to anybody for project ... The Birch slab cost me 200 $/can. It was about 4 in. thck. x 36 in. x 80 in. long.

Most of the time or every time, the drying process will generate a bend in the slab that need to be flatten.

I have search over the internet for the best way to flatten a large woodslab. Finally find out the best and cheaper way was to build a router table as the flattening tool ....

The router table cost me around 40$/can. to build ...

When the setup done, be prepare and enjoy about 4 to 6 hours of router :-D

Since I'm not well equiped with a welding machine at home, I design and draw the legs and make them build by a local worshop.

Once again, since I did not have the appropriate tools, I had the support made by a workshop.

The design was done by my self ... I was scare to see the support bend with the amplifier weight ... so I done finish element on it ... To eliminate the deformation, I need to add two flanges ... one at the front and one at the end ...

My wood slab had a big crack at the end ... 2 options was there for me ... fill it with epoxy or do some dovetail.

I chose the dovetail option ... The idea was to make them original ...

I glued together Rosewood and an a thin piece in the midlle to come out with a unique finished ...

The only thing left was to cut them in different size.

No special technique with that step ... All you need is a couple of tools and patience ...

I sent my different parts to a powder coat painting process ... that way, it end with a robust and clean finished !

Since every dovetail were custom size, the only way for me was to aligned them on the table ... and draw the perimeter.

Then, I use a router to make the first rough carving ... Make sure to ajust the height to let the dovetail go over the top a little bit. (allowing final sanding)

Finished the carving with a wood chisel.

I good tips is to make a little draft angle in your dovetail ... that way, when you will insert them, the fit will be almost perfect !

I've done 3 layers on the bottom, and about 5 layers ton the top ...

Finally, it was the time to assemble everything together ...

Aligne each part attentively ...

Mark and pre-drill every holes needed ...

Screw them and enjoy your the last time you'll see your TV stand bottom way.
