Little Paper Fox
THIS is a special project for hot days. This sculpture was for an animal lover, and it took me a long time since each part had to dry very well to continue with the next one.
Supplies
For this sculpture you need:
- newspaper
- scraps of wire
- pliers
- masking tape
- Glue
- blender
-paint and brushes
-a painters knife or carving utensils
Wire Frame
The skeleton of the sculpture is made from scraps of wire. You have to make the body, the head and the legs.
Twist the wire to make it firmer
Paper Cover
Then you have to give firmness to the body, with a bit of newspaper, and glue (hot water and flour)
Fixing Some Details
Once the previous structure is hardened, we can now give it more volume.
Prepare the Paper Maché
-cut the newspaper into small pieces
-let it soak overnight
-put it in a blender with a lot of water and grind.
-remove excess water with a strainer and a cloth (you can reuse the water)
-gather several portions of the shredded paper and add glue to it.
i like to mix with the water and flour mix too.
You can add a spoonful of plaster powder as well to make it dry faster
Cover Some Parts With Paper Maché
i covered every part with PVA glue, then put the paper maché
at this step i added some fake eyes
and let it dry for a few days.
And Cover Other Parts With Paper Mache
Once everything was dry, i added more paper and shape it with a painter's knife and modeling utensils.
and let it dry for a few days.
Fluffy Tail
Once the days had passed, and the little fox was dry, I put the paper paste on one side of the tail, let it dry and added it to the other side of the tail.
Why did I do this?, because the mix is very heavy while the paste is wet, so it could bend.
It´s better to let one side dry, make it firm, and then add the wet paper maché
Later i tried to make some more details
haha tails
Color and Varnish
In this step, I took all the brown paint jars and started mixing it with an orange hue. For the legs I mixed brown with black and for the tail and chest I mixed with white paint.
Then I gave it a coat of varnish on all sides and let it dry in the sun.
This sculpture is for summer days since it isn't protected against the rain.
I´ve read that the people who make these figures give the sculpture a few layers of cement before paint it to make it waterproof.
Thanks!
