Link's Awakening: Crocheted Link's Hat

I watch people play the newest Legend of Zelda game, Link's Awakening, and I was interested in creating a project to accompany the game. I thought Link's hat would be the best prop to represent this franchise, as it is an instantly recognizable feature of the character. Because I enjoy crocheting, I thought this would be the best way to create this iconic hat.

This pattern can be adjusted to fit children, men, and women. It can also be used to dress up family pets. This hat works well for costumes and cosplay. It can be modified easily to be a witch's hat or elf hat if needed. Also the colors that I use can be changed if one desires for different colored hat and ears.

Beginning crocheters will want to start at Step 1 and move through sequentially. Intermediate and expert crocheters may want to skip through to later steps. I wanted to make a crochet pattern that was accessible for everyone.

Key abbreviations: sc- Single Crochet, dc- Double Crochet, inc- Increase

One skein of green worsted size 4 yarn.

One skein of beige worsted size 4 yarn.

One 4.25mm crochet hook.

Scissors

Either stitch markers or a scrap piece of an off-color yarn.

First place tail of yarn between thumb and ring finger. Next wrap the yarn around the top of the index finger behind both the index and middle.

Wrap the yarn around the index and middle finger, making an X on the inside of the fingers. Pinch yarn between thumb and ring finger.

Place crochet hook under first loop and grab second loop. Then twist hook and pull yarn out from under front loop. Gently pull ring off fingers and hold the loop on the hook.

Wrap yarn over the hook and then pull through the loop on the hook.

Place hook into the front of the circle and then wrap yarn over the hook.

Pull the yarn through the front of the circle with the hook. Now there are two loops on the hook. Place yarn over hook to now have three loops onto the hook.

Pull the top loop closes to hook through the middle and bottom loop with the hook. Now there should only be one loop on the hook.

Repeat steps 5-7 for three more single crochets into the ring.

Once there are four stitches on the ring, grab the tail while holding the loop on the hook and pull gently. This will close the ring and now you have a magic circle. This circle will be used for the hat and the ears.

Create the magic circle.

Increase in the 4 stitches of the magic circle for a total of 8 stitches.

To increase (inc), single crochet (sc) into the same stitch twice.

Cut the yarn at about 3 inches long, then place yarn over hook and pull through the loop. Tighten the knot and crochet the tail into the hem of the hat.

Create a magic circle with the beige yarn. However, you will be double crocheting the ears and the starting circle.

Create the circle the same way as the hat the place yarn over hook to make two loops. Then place hook into the circle and yarn over the hook again.

Pull hook through the circle and you should have three loops on your hook.

Yarn over and pull the yarn through two loops. You should have two loops left on your hook.

Yarn over and pull through last two loops.

Repeat these steps three more times for the magic circle. Then close the circle.

Use the long tail left from the ears to sew them onto the hat. Make sure that they are even on either side of the hat.

Now you have a hat that anyone can wear. Perfect for costumes and cosplay alike.
