Light-UP Cornhole
This is a basic Cornhole board that has lights behind it to allow for playing at night or in the evening when it is getting dark.
I only built one of these for my own use, but you can easily build one more to play by the rules.
Gather Your Materials
For this project the consumables that you will use are:
- Plywood
- 2x4
- Copper Tape
- LED's
- AA Battery Pack
- 2 Inch Deck Screws
Tools that I used
- Soldering Iron
- RotoZip
- Drill
- Electric Sander
- Chop Saw
- Spray Paint
Cut the Board
I started my game with a piece of scrap plywood that I had, so I was unable to build it perfectly to the game specifications.
The proper specifications of the board should measure 2'x4'. Mine is only 2'x3', but it is still playable.
To get the proper 6 inch hole at the top of the board I used a RotoZip. I drilled a hole in the center of where I wanted it, and another one 3 inches from that. I used the circle cutting attachment for the RotoZip, and cut a nice hole in it.
Cut and Attach the Legs
The legs that I am using are 2x4's cut to about 11 Inches to get the required 12 Inches off of the ground for the top of the board.
I then traced the outline of the 2x4's on the top corners of the boards so that I could figure out where to screw the boards to the 2x4's. I decided to use 2 screws per 2x4 to allow for a strong attachment point.
For the best effect, you should pre-drill the holes in the board so that it does not split.
Once you have the holes drilled, screw through the board and into the 2x4's and it should be attached well.
After the legs are attached, it may be a good idea to sand all of the joints, edges and surfaces.
Decorate the Board
I used spray paint for this, but you can use whatever you want. The color that I used matches my house, so I used it.
You can paint it with a roller, or brush, or however you want in any color that you want to express yourself or your ideas.
Add Your Lights
Once your board is built, you can add some lights if you want to the back of it. The lights that I use are there so when playing at night, you can see the outline of the board and the hole .
To do it the way that I did it:
- Put down 2 parallel strips of copper tape where ever you want your lights to go
- If there are any joints, it is best to solder them together to reduce the chances of an open circuit at that point
- Solder the LED's in with the negative leads connected to one strip and the positive leads connected to the other strip
- Solder in your battery pack
- Mount your battery pack
My battery pack had an integrated switch, if yours does not, you will have to add the switch in series with either the positive or negative leads
Play the Game
Have fun with your new Cornhole game that can be played when it is getting dark.
