Levitating Biker, Diamagnetic Levitation

DIAMAGNETIC LEVITATION pyrolytic graphite & neodymium magnets, DIALEV

Difficulty of realization 6/10

How It Work

Cattura3.PNG

Diamagnetic materials create an induced magnetic field in a direction opposite to an externally applied magnetic field, and are repelled by the applied magnetic field. The pyrolytic graphite that use in this experiment is one of the most strongly diamagnetic materials that exist. The track is made of neodymium magnets.

How to Make, Biker

Fig2.JPG

You can use magnets of various types and sizes, I used 15mm x 4mm x 4mm who have the important characteristic of having the direction of the magnetic field perpendicular to the 4x15.

Also as regards the plate of graphite may be used various sizes, I've used a 20mm x 20mm x 1mm. To make the experiment more fun I glued a caricature of a cyclist on the graphite, you can paste over the image that you like, it is important to minimize the weight of the paper and glue.

In the image above you can see how it should be the path of the magnetic polarity of the magnets, the north and south poles must be alternated type chessboard.

To build the road faster magnetic board of "slicing" the block magnets as shown in the figure above, and then add the "slices" on the 4x4.

To obtain The road uphill curve stuck small pieces of adhesive tape as seen in the figure above so that this small thickness inclined contact between the magnets. If the graphite can not stand still on the road means that the road is not perfectly level, then put the sheets of paper to lift the lower side of the road.
