Lego Rainbow Pride: 5 Lego Tips

IMG_4025.JPG

This display was created to celebrate Pride Month. It uses all six colors of the rainbow (which also are the six colors of the rainbow flag. Legos are my hobby so I used legos to create the display. This display also shows five lego tips/techniques. Each step will focus on one tip/technique.

Step 1: Lego Lettering

Lego lettering is used to spell out PRIDE 2021.

Step 2: Curving Legos

Curving legos are used for the banner on the left side of the display and the flag on the right side of the display.

Step 3: Lego Patterns

Lego patterns are used to create the butterfly.

Step 4: Building Facade

The Building Facade technique is used to create the front of Stonewall Inn (the location for the 1960s Gay Protests).

Step 5: Lego Mosaic

Lego Mosaic technique is used to create the sunrise.

Step 6: Putting It All Together

The final Lego 2021 Pride Display.

Supplies

A variety of legos are used in this creation. They are organized below by the lego tip/technique.

The lego lettering for PRIDE 2021 fits across 32 studs which allows for 1 to 3 studs per letter/number.

The letters are shown in photo 1 and the numbers in photo 5. Below are the specific directions for each letter and number:

Letter P (Red- 3 studs) - photo 2

1) Place 2 - 1x1 bricks and 1 - 1x1 plate on top of one another in stud 1

2) Position a 1x3 plate on top of step 1 so that it spans studs 1 - 3.

3) Position a 1x1 brick on top of the 1x3 plate (step 2) on stud 1 and on stud 3.

4) Position a 1x3 plate on top of the two 1x1 brick.

Letter R (Orange - 3 studs) - see photo 3

The Curving Legos technique is used to create the banner and the flag in this display.

Banner

1) Create one row of each color alternating a 1x2 brick and a 1x1 round brick. Use a 1x1 brick where a 1x2 brick does not fit (see photo 1). Red is in row one, orange row two, yellow row three, green row four, blue row five, and purple row six.

2) Stack three 1x1 round bricks (trans clear) on top of five 1x1 bricks. Repeat for a second stack.

3) Bend the legos slightly to create a wavy motion.

4) Position the banner (see photo 2) on top of the brick stacks (see step 2).

Flag

1) Create two rows of each color alternating a 1x2 plate and a 1x1 round plate. Use a 1x1 plate where a 1x2 plate does not fit (see photo 3). Red is first followed by orange, yellow, green, blue, and purple.

2) Stack three 1x1 round bricks (trans clear) on top of one another.

3) Bend the legos slightly to create a wavy motion.

4) Position the flag (see photo 4) on top of the brick stack (see step 2).

image1.JPG

The lego building facade technique is used to create the front of the Stonewall Inn.

1) Get a photography of the Stonewall Inn (search Google for +"Stonewall Inn" and look at images).

2) Sketch out a drawing and determine lego pieces.

3) Build the first floor (six bricks high) of the Inn using medium nougat 1x2 and 1x4 masonry bricks (see photo 1). Insert a 1x4x3 panel (as shown in photo 1) and leave a 1x4x6 opening for the door.

4) Lock the first floor together by placing a 1x16 plate across the top of the first floor (see reddish brown stripe in photo 1).

5) Build the second floor (seven bricks high) of the Inn using tan and dark tan 1x2 masonry bricks. Complete the first row of bricks and then position two 2x4 black plates as shown in photo 1. Fill in that row with 1x1, 1x2, and 1x4 plates. Complete the second through seventh row of bricks including two windows as shown in photo 1.

6) Position the two black fences on top of the 2x4 black plates as shown in photo 2.

7) Stack two 1x1 medium nougat bricks on top of a 1x1 medium nougat brick with clip on top of a 1x1 medium nougat brick on top of a 1x1 medium nougat brick clip on top of a 1x1 medium nougat brick (see photo 3).

8) Insert the door into the clips (see photo 4).

9) Position the door behind the facade (see photo 5).

Lego Mosaic Technique is used to create the sunrise for this display.

Sunrise Pattern

1) Print an empty grid (search Goggle for 20x20 grid).

2) Color the mosaic you wish to create (see photo 1).

3) Stack four 2x4 blue bricks end-to-end (see photo 2).

4) Lock the four bricks together using 1x6 plates of any color on the back side (see photo 3)

5) Stack eight 1x2 blue bricks side by side on top of the 2x4 bricks on the front side (see photos 2 and 3).

6) Stack three 1x2 trans dark blue bricks on the right side and three 1x2 trans dark blue bricks on the left side on top of the 1x2 brick (see step 5).

7) Stack a 1x2 technic brick (any color) with a single hole in the middle of the 1x2 bricks (see step 5) and add a 1x1 brick on either side.

8) Using 1x1, 1x2, 1x3, 1x4,1x8, and 1x12 plates follow the pattern on your grid from the bottom up.

9) Finish the sunrise by inserting a ½ technic pin into the opening in the technic brick (see photo 2). Attach a 3x3 white disc to the pin and a 2x2 pearl gold dome to the white disc.

Positioning the Sunrise

1) Stack eleven 2x6 bricks (or 2x4 or combination) on top of one another. Repeat for a second stack (see photo 4).

2) Position the two support behind the Stonewall Inn to support the sunrise and to block the view through the windows (see photos 4 and 5)
