Lego Helicopter

In this tutorial, you will learn how to build a Lego helicopter.  The materials and final product are shown above.  You can choose which colors you would like your helicopter to be in.

Step 1: Build the Body

P1030861.JPG
To build the body you will need: five 4x2 blocks, four 3x2 blocks, and one 2x2 block.  For the bottom layer of the body, you will need to lay three 4x2's and two 3x2's in the following pattern (starting from bottom right and going clockwise).  You will lay one 4x2 Lego horizontal to yourself, next to it (also horizontal to you), you will lay one 3x2 block.  You will lay another 4x2 block vertical to the previous block, making it rest next to the the end four pegs.  Laying horizontally next to the end four pegs of that 4x2 block, you will need to lay a 3x2 block.  Finally, you will rest the last 4x2 block vertically up against the 3x2 block and also resting on the side of the first 3x2 block.

After you have the bottom layer done, you will build the top layer directly on that one, this will hold the bottom layer together.  This time, starting in the top right corner and working your way counter-clockwise, you will need to place one 4x2 block connecting the 4x2 and 3x2 blocks below it.  You will need to place the block so it covers four pegs on each block.  Next, you will take a 3x2 block and place it up against the 4x2 in the last step, this will connect it with two pegs on the 3x2 and four pegs on the 4x2 below it.  Now you will need to place a 4x2 vertically next to the last 3x2 block.  This block will connect with four pegs on each of the 4x2 blocks below it.  You will next need to place a 3x2 block horizontally next to the previous 4x2 block.  It will connect with two pegs of the 3x2 and four pegs of the 4x2 blocks below it.  the final piece to create the body of the helicopter is the 2x2 piece, this will connect next to the 3x2 piece in the bottom right.

Step 2: Build the Cockpit

P1030859.JPG
Like the body, you will need to create layers for the cockpit of the helicopter.  For the cockpit, you will need three 2x1 blocks, one clear 2x1 block, two 1x1 blocks, two 4x2 blocks, one 4x1 block, three 2x2 blocks, one propeller, and one propeller connector.

Bottom layer:
Beginning from the top left and going clockwise, you will need to place a 2x1 block horizontally to you.  Next, you will place a 1x1 next to the 2x1 block.  Next to the 1x1 block, you will place a 2x2 block, this will put one corner by the 1x1 block and leave two pegs "hanging" off towards you.  Now, you will place a 2x2 block next to the previous one.  A 1x1 block will need to be placed next to the 2x2 block, at the bottom left peg. Next, place a 2x1 block next to the 1x1 block, now the top half and bottom half will look like mirrored opposites.  The 2x1 clear block will be placed lastly in this layer, it will fit snugly between the two 2x1 pieces on their left-most pegs.

2nd layer:
For this layer you will need to place a 4x2 block over the 2x1 blocks and the clear 2x1 block.  to its right, you will place another 4x2 block, this one will cover each of the 1x1 blocks, and two pegs each of the 2x2 blocks below it.  Lastly you will place the 4x1 block next to the previous 4x2 block, it will connect on the final two pegs of each of the 2x2 blocks.

3rd layer:
This layer will be simple.  You will need to place a 2x2 block on the middle four pegs of the middle 4x2 block.  You will next need to place a 2x1 block directly next to the 2x2 block, it will sit on the middle two pegs of the 4x1 block.

Propeller:
You will need to connect the white propeller connector to the propeller, this can be done by inserting it in the hole already in the propeller.  The propeller should have the pegs pointing away from the connector after connected.  Now you will place the connector on top of the 2x1 and 2x2 blocks, using two pegs each.

Step 3: Build the Base

P1030858.JPG
For the base, you will need to have two 3x2 blocks, two 2x2 blocks, one middle connector, and 2 1x1 blocks.  WARNING: the base will not be completely connected until you assemble it with the rest of the helicopter in the final step.

First you will need to lay the two 3x2 blocks next to each other (as shown in the picture).  You will also need to place the two 2x2 blocks next to each other and next to one end of the 3x2 blocks.  The joystick can be created by stacking the 2 1x1 blocks on top of each other and placing them on the middle connector.  The middle connector will now need to be attached between the two 2x2 blocks, using one peg from each of them.  You will need to place the connector so that it is next to the 3x2 blocks also, or it will not fit in the cockpit during the assembly step.

Step 4: Build the Tail

P1030860.JPG
To build the tail, you will need one 6x2 block, one 4x2 block, one middle connector (the black piece shown in column 2, row 2 of the parts list), and one 3x1 block.

The tail is a pretty simple design.  You will start by placing the 6x2 block in front of you.  On top of it, you will place the 4x2 block.  This block will connect to the four pegs on the end of the 6x2 block.  After the 4x2 block is in place, you will need to attach the middle connector to the end two pegs of the 4x2.  The final piece is the 3x1 block, which will attach to the middle connector on one end of the block.

Step 5: Build the Legs

P1030856.JPG
To build the legs of the helicopter, you will need eight 1x1 pieces and the two 6x1 pieces.  You will need to stack one 1x1 piece on top of another.  You will need to repeat this four times.  After building the 1x1-two-high pieces, you will need to place one on the second peg in on each side of the 6x1 pieces.  Your helicopter legs should looks like the picture above.

Step 6: Assemble the Helicopter

P1030855.JPG
To assemble the helicopter, you will need to have all of the parts you have made in the previous steps.  You can start by placing the base on the table in front of you.  You will want to be sure that the two 2x2 blocks are facing to to your left.  After the base is in place, you will want to locate the body of the helicopter.  This can be placed so the joystick is against the inside of the 4x2 block from the top layer of the body and the 2x2 gap is to your right.

Next you will need to attach the tail to the body.  There will be a 2x2 slot on the right side of the body that the 6x2 block can sit on.  The 6x2 block will need to be placed so it has only four pegs attached to the body.

After the tail is attached to helicopter, you will need to attach the cockpit. The cockpit is probably in two pieces, one with a 4x2 block, two 2x1 blocks, and one clear 2x1 block.  This piece will need to be placed so the clear 2x1 block is sitting between the middle two pegs of the body.  The rest of the cockpit can be placed right behind this piece, the two pieces will touch each other, but not overlap.

The last part to attach is the legs.  The legs can be placed on the bottom of the helicopter.  They will need to be attached to the base.  One of the white uprights from each leg will need to be placed on the outer corners of the 2x2 blocks from the base.  The other upright from each leg will need to be placed in parallel with the first one.  The upright will likely connect to the second from the end hole of the 3x2 base block.

Congratulations, you have now completed your own Lego helicopter.
