Lego Bird House: Display or Use

The purpose of this project is twofold: 1) to create a birdhouse display that has a nest with baby birds and a parent coming in to feed them and 2) convert the display into a usable bird house. Specifically, the bird house is designed for mountain chickadees.The opening is a little over one inch in diameter which is large enough for the chickadees which small enough to prevent entry from predators.

3 - plate 1x6 (tan and/or black)

6 - plate, modified 1x1 with light attachment (tan and/or black)

12 - plate, modified 1x1 with tooth horizontal (bright yellow)

6 - brick, modified 1x1 with stud on front (tan)

1 - plate 6x12 (any color)

Build the Base

1) Position five 4x6 plates on the baseplate as shown in image 1.

2) Position the twelve 1x12 bricks around the plates (3 high) as shown in image 2.

Build the Baby Birds

1) Position one plate (modified 1x1 with tooth horizontal) on each side of the plate (modified 1x1 with light attachment) as shown in image 1. Repeat six times.

2) Position two plates (modified 1x1 with light attachment) between one plate (1x6) and one tile (1x6) as shown in image 2. Repeat three times as shown in image 3.

3) Add two 1x1 brick (with stud on front) to the back of each completed set (image 3) as shown in image 4.

Build the Nest

1) Position one 1x10 brick on top of another 1x10 brick. Repeat with two more bricks. Position sets in the bird house as shown in image 1.

2) Cover the bottom of the bird house using plates (6x12, 2x12, 2x12) as shown in image 2.

3) Cover the last four rows of studs with tiles as shown in image 3.

4) Position the three sets of baby birds as shown in image 4.

5) Dump at least 20 tiles (1x8, 1x6, and/or 1x4) around the baby birds as shown image 5.

Build Front

1) Position the two inverted arches on top of the dark green bricks (middle six studs) in front. Position the two arches on top of the inverted arches as shown in image 1.

2) Position two 1x1 brick on each arch to fill in the open spot (see image 2). Position three 1x4 bricks and/or two to six 1x2 bricks on top of the arches in the center (see image 2).

3) Position two 1x2 tan bricks on the outside of the arches and inverted arches (see image 2).

4) Build up three 1x2x3 slopes (tan) on top of each 1x2 tan brick as shown in image 2.

5) Build bird perch: 1x2 plate (reddish brown) on 1x2 plate (reddish brown) on top of 1x1 brick with stud on front (reddish brown) on top of 1x2 jumper plate (reddish brown) on top of 1x2 brick (tan) as shown in images 3 and 4.

6) Position 2x2 brick round on the front stud as shown in image 2.

6) Add the final two slopes on top ending with one 1x2 plate and two 1x1 slopes as shown in image 2.

Build Roof

1) Attach 23 - 2x16 plates as shown in image 1. Position 1x10 plate on second 2x16 plate near the bottom as shown in image 1.

2) Attach 23 - 2x16 plates as shown in image 2. Position 1x10 plate on second 2x16 plate near the top as shown in image 2.

3) Attach each bottom hinge (quantity 4) to a top hinge. Attach top hinge side to roof (one at the end of each 1x10 plate (see image 2).

4) Sit bottom hinges on dark green bricks on each side of the bird house (see images 3 and 4).

Build Bird Feet

1) Connect hinge cylinder 1x2 to hinge cylinder 1x3 and insert pneumatic T into opening (see images 1, 2, and 3).

2) Attach four bar 1Ls to the pneumatic T (see images 2 and 3). Position one outside bar to face backward and the other three forward (this is the foot position for chickadees). Position the foot on the bird house opening (see image 4).

Change to Usable Bird House

The bird house can be converted to a usage bird house:

1) Remove the front and roof (see image 1).

2) Position 1x14 brick (dark green) on the front set of dark green bricks and a second 1x16 brick (dark green) on the back set of dark green bricks. Position two 1x10 bricks (tan) on top of the 1x14 dark green brick on the front and two 1x10 bricks (tan) on top of the 1x14 dark green brick on the back (see image 2).

3) Rebuild the front with the addition of two more slopes to the bottom. This will also necessitate the addition of two 1x1 bricks on each side to fill in the gaps (see image 2 before the 1x1 bricks).

4) Build the back side of the bird house similar to the front as shown in image 3.
