Leather Wallet From a Boot

Minimalist Wallet aus alten Lederstiefeln - Upcycling (FREE PATTERN)

Don't throw your old leather boots away! Make a minimalist leather wallet / cardholder out of it. You can also use old leather baseball gloves, bags and so on. By the way, leather is very robust and sustainable material. Okay, let us make one :)

Materials and Tools

Materials

  • Old leather boots

Tools:

  • Cutter
  • Ruler
  • Hammer
  • Half round punches
  • Scratch awl
  • Wood slicker
  • Chisel (4 mm)
  • Leather glue
  • Wing divider
  • 2x needles
  • Sew thread
  • Tokonole leather finish
  • colorless leather fat (Clear leather dressing)
  • Rotary tool (for example: Dremel) or sandpaper
  • Edge beveler
  • Lighter

Removing the Leather From the Boots

The fun part :D. Destroying the boots! STOP! That was a joke! Carefully removing the leather from the boot. You need big flat pieces. Remove / rip out all fabrics wich are glued to the leather. Clean the leather with a leather cleaning brush (optional).

Transfer the pattern on each leather piece. Use the scratch awl tool.

Cutting Out the Leather Pieces

Use the ruler, cutter and half round punches to cut the leather pieces out.

Sand and Burnishing the Edges

Sand and burnishing the edges of the front and back pocket. Use tokonole leather finish and the wood slicker to burnishing the edges.

Glue the Leather Pieces Together and Taking Off Sharp Edges

The areas to be glued on the smooth side should first be roughed with a sharp blade. Glue all pieces together. After gluing use the edge beveler for taking off the sharp edges.

Punching Holes and Sewing

For sewing use the saddle stitch technique. On YouTube you can easy find a bunch of tutorials. Finally snip and burn the ends.

The leather has lost a lot of fat, so it has to be treated. To protect the leather use clear leather dressing or beeswax leather fat.
