Measure Out Your Leather Piece

1.jpg

Measure out a piece of non stretchy 4 x 6-inch piece of leather

Flip the Leather

6.jpg

Flip the leather and tape it down with painter’s tape. This will hold it in place while you are cutting the leather. Draw a line on the back of the leather about 1/2 inch down. This will be where you bring your rotary cutter to each time you cut the leather.

Cut Your Tassel

Measure out 1/8th of an inch between each cut. Leave around 1/2” or so at the end.

Cut the Leather to Hold Your Tassel to Your Keyring

Cut around the last 1/2 of the leather or so.

Glue

Glue the top of your tassel (the holder) together and then add glue to your the area where you did not cut. If you are using a cement, let it dry a little first until it's tacky. Scour the shiny part of the leather you are going to glue to the tassel with a sharp tool.

Roll Up Your Tassel

Roll the tassel up. Make sure you are rolling it nice and tightly. Add any extra glue to your piece and put something heavy on top. Let the glue dry and cut off any extra leather. This you can use for your pom pom or faux fur ball.

Rivet (optional)

You can add a decorative rivet to your tassel. If you made the tassel holder thinner than 1/2” then you may not be able to add a rivet. Punch a hole through the tassel with a rotary punch, drive punch or press and add the rivet color of your choice. Set the rivet with your mallet and rivet setting tool.

Faux Fur Ball/pom pom/charm

You can add a faux fur ball, pom pom or charm to this area of the key chain. Take a piece of your leather and glue the suede part together. Once it is dry, you can either just keep it like that or you can add a wire coil.

Wire Coil (optional)

Cut a piece of dead soft craft wire (14-18 gauge) with your flush cutters and twist it around your bail pliers. Try to get a loop close to the size of the leather holding the faux fur ball onto the chain. Since the wire is dead soft it should be easy to use your hands to wrap the wire around and pull it tight with your flat nose pliers. You can loop it around as many times as you like and cut off any extra wire. Straighten any part of the wire with your pliers. You may need a metal file to take any sharp edges or burrs off the metal and you are done!!
