Leather Scroll Cell / Mobile Phone Holder

I needed a cell / mobile phone holder, and came up with this design using wet formed leather. It's easy to make and supports your phone vertically or horizontally. Great for a hall table or bedside table.

Here is what you will need:

• Piece of 3mm veg tan thick leather at least 24cm x 9cm
• Piece of wooden dowel .75cm diameter (approx)
• Piece of packaging tube 3.5cm diameter (approx)
• Leather dye - I'm using Fiebings Pro dye in Royal Blue
• 4 small clamps
• Craft knife
• Cling Film
• Metal Ruler
• Acrylic Leather finish - I'm using Fiebings Resolene + brush
• Impact adhesive

Using a craft knife and metal ruler, cut your leather into a rectangle 24cm by 9cm

Cut a 10cm length of your 3.5cm diameter packaging tube and wrap in cling file.

Do the same with your 0.75cm wooden dowel - cut a 10cm length and wrap in cling film.

Using a wool dauber or a bit of scrap cloth dye your leather with the Fiebings Pro leather dye front back and sides.

Use circular motions to apply the dye and go over the front side 3 times so you have an even colour.

Make sure you protect your work surface using a bit of cardboard and wear rubber gloves.

Wait for the dye to dry.

Soak the leather in water for about 5 minutes until pliable.

Using the wooden dowel roll up one end of the wet leather making sure the finished side of the leather is on the outside, then remove the dowel and clamp at both sides.

Now roll the other end of the wet leather round your cling filmed packaging tube. Leaving the tube in place, clamp at both sides.

Leave until thoroughly dry.

Remove the packaging tube. If the leather is not completely dry, leave a bit longer until really dry.

Unfurl the larger scroll slightly and check the fit with your phone. Make sure the phone sits steady and doesn't fall over.

When you are happy with the fit, mark the position of the end of the larger scroll as we will glue this in place.

Run a line of impact adhesive along the edge of the larger scroll and at the position you marked. Leave for 5 minutes and then press firmly to glue in place.

Dilute the Resolene acrylic leather finish 50/50 with water. Brush on inside and out and leave to dry. This gives a water resistant finish.

Now your mobile / cell phone holder is ready, just add your phone. Great for on a bedside table.
