I love looking at Pinterest to get inspiration for projects. After seeing some really cute leather rings I decided to design my own.

This ring is made with one piece of leather, no sewing involved. It's held together by slipping part of the heart through a slit in the other one. I had a lot of fun designing this and I love how the final product turned out.

I am by no means and expert on leather work, I just like to play around with different fabrics. This project is great for beginners as there are no special tools or skilled needed. And it only takes about 5 mins to make!

In this instructable I'll show you how to make a template exactly your size and then how to make a ring.

Supplies

You will need:

  • my ring template
  • scissors
  • pen
  • small piece of supple leather
  • scotch tape
  • measuring tape

Measure Size

First off, figure out which finger you want to wear your ring on. Then take your measuring tape and wrap it around that finger to find out how big you need to make your ring.

My finger was not quite 2 1/2 inches but I decided to round up to that. Now I can use that size to customize my template which we will get to in the next step.

For this project I wanted anyone to be able to make and wear the ring so I came up with my customization template to make the ring any size you want. I was pretty proud of myself for coming up with it.

Download and print off the template PDF making sure your printer is set to "no scaling".

Decide which size of heart you want to make, big or small. I decided to do the big one.

Cut out your two sides of the template.

Now place your template pieces above the measuring tape and arrange them so that tip of your two heart halves are the same distance apart as your finger measurement from earlier. So for mine I lined them up to be 2 1/2 inches apart. The band strips should overlap.

Tape the band together where the ends meet and now you have a template for your size.

Trace and Cut

To make this ring your leather needs to be fairly supple. I was able to make a few rings out of stiffer leather but it was very difficult. Supple leather is much easier to work with.

Place your template on the back of your leather piece and use a pen to careful trace it. Don't forget to mark where the slit will go as well.

With a pair of scissors cut out your shape.

For the slit, fold the leather in half lengthwise to cut being careful not to cut too far.

Assemble

Finally we can assemble the ring.

Hold your leather with the back facing you. Take your end with no slit and carefully work it though the slit on the other end. Once you get the end through, pull on the band to bring the two heart halves together.

Now you can wear your beautiful new ring!

(Also these are addicting to make so don't be surprised if you find yourself making a ton of these.)
