Learning Basic Karate Kicks

Hi guys!

I won the European Karate championship in 2014 and the Israeli national championship 10 times.

Using this instructable, you will learn 3 basic kicks in Karate, hopefully giving you the foundation to learn Karate/other martial arts - highly recommended! :)

Supplies

One of the best things about it is that you only have to bring yourself (and do a quick warmup before).

Roundhouse Kick - Mawashi Geri

Step One: Pick up your back leg starting with your body sideways.

Step Two: Pivot your other foot at the same time as you turn your hips.

Step Three: Snap your lower leg out and kick. The power of a kick always comes from the hip (this may seem strange at first, but as you learn more about karate, you will realize why it's important that the power comes from the hip).

Step Four: When the kick reaches its target, get your leg back in the same direction as the kick until your foot is on the ground.

Side Thrust Kick - Yoko Geri Kekomi

Step One: Hold your back leg sideways while your body is sideways.

Step Two: Turn your hips and pivot on the other foot, just as you did with the roundhouse kick.

Step Three: Kick straight out with your heel, making sure to straighten both parts of your leg simultaneously.

Remember the principle we discussed in the roundhouse kick section - power comes from the hips.

Spinning Kick - Ura Mawashi Geri

This one is a bit harder. All the kicks discussed in this instructable are not easy and require practice - with patience and practice, you will be able to perform them.

Ura Mawashi kick has a similar structure to Mawashi kick, but they have an inverted path:

Step One: Pick up your back leg starting with your body sideways.

Step Two: Pivot your other foot at the same time as you turn your hips.

Step Three: As you raise your knee, push your hips out in the opposite direction of the roundhouse kick.

Here are some general tips:

  • Kicking should always be done with an aligned body and a raised knee.
  • Whenever you attack, keep your hands up to defend your body.
