This is a super easy skill that I learned when I was young and have never forgotten.

First, place the end of the yarn between your thumb and your pointer finger. Wrap the yarn behind your middle finger, then in front of your ring finger, then behind your pinky. Now weave the yarn in front of your pinky, then behind your ring finger, then in front of your middle finger, then behind your pointer finger, stop at your thumb. By now there should be one loop around each finger except your thumb. Repeat this step. Now there are two loops around your fingers. Pick up the bottom loop of your pointer finger and lift it off of your finger going over the top loop. Repeat this step for each finger. Now there should only be one loop on each of your fingers.

Continue these steps until you have the length you want. They should only ever be two loops one finger.

To end your chain, take the loop off of your pointer finger and put it on your middle finger, take the bottom loop off of your finger, pulling it over the top loop. Repeat this step on all of your fingers until you reach your pinky, there should only be one loop left. Cut the yarn off from the yarn ball, string the yarn tail through the last loop and pull it tight.
