Lead Loading Filling Bodywork Information Tutorial Demonstration Technique Guide

This is my first instructable demonstration video of how to use lead,flux and tallow to tin and load lead for bodywork, fuel tanks and other metalwork, I have published a short video only version I have now added pictures from a repair project that I learnt the process for. Lead Loading and Safety

The process of loading lead is an old way of filling dents and smoothing joints in metal work before painting it is also waterproof unlike plastic fillers.

It can be used on most steel surfaces but remember safety first you wil be using heat so make sure there is no flammable stuff about, fuel tanks must be washed and well ventilated, lead is also not good for you so do not machine sand or handle with out suitable protection. You are responsible for your own safety and I am only guiding you on how to do the technique not how to make sure you stay out of hospital or worse.

First step is preperation this tank was aqua blasted to wash out old fuel and remove rust, it was then coated with flux and tinned.

then the lead was addded and built up to fill all the holes and bring the surface level up above the steel.

The lead was then shaped back with a drednought file and then checked for shape with the badge.

Finally it was sanded by hand and then primered before spray putty and more sanding to produce a smooth surface for the top colour.

Modern fuels contain chemicals that oxidise lead so the tank was chemically lined inside to fully seal it so it was ready for finishing.
